Author help me get this sound (from Buchla 700)
Dimitree
hi everyone
I fell in love with this sound at 15.30 of this video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8mpaiiHPJaY

from the Buchla 700.

Can anyone help me understand how to get that sound (more or less, not perfect)?
looking at the video (some minutes before it plays), you can even spot pretty much all settings I guess, but I'm totally new to FM and, more of anything else, of Buchla 700..

any hint?

thank you!
Dofkev
Start with 4 oscillators. Patch them in a standard carrier/modulator FM patch where all the frequencies are matched - but not sync'd. You can start with sine waves, but that video sounded like the modulators were some type of square or even saw. The buchla 258 oscillators are great for this because they have a variable waveshape that allows for subtle changes in the tone.

do you think is possible to replicate with a buchla music easel ?

The waveforms are folded. You could approach it with an easel. A pair of 261e's with a 285e using the soft ring mod could get you much closer. The 285e can make your patch sound BIG like that 700 patch.

Alessandro gets close with his Easel and some outboard fx and eq. Checkout his Forse series...

Alessandro is the master of these sounds.

Here is a humble Easel homage that has similar timbres with an Easel single pass:

Thanks, Forse is really impressive.
Would you like to share your patch for Homage Cortini? I wish I could play this kind of drone every day.
thank you in advance

What do you think of replacing the peer of 261 by a peer of 258 more FM ?
J3RK
You can make these sounds with indexed linear FM or phase modulation in addition to the folding mentioned above. Run the modulation signal through a VCA, and control the depth with an envelope or function generator.

Thanks again

Do you think that by programming a DX7 one can reach the same timbre?
ritchiedrums
I have a reface DX.
It is much easier than the original DX7 to get in & program.
You will get close to this sound with a bit of patience.

It amazes me how COOL & Expensive a Buchla 700 is &
how UNCOOL a Yamaha DX is currently...
lol lol lol

This is the kind of response I expected, a reface interest me more because of programming. If you ever get to record a demo similar to the sound of the 700 in the video, I'm a taker.
