analog video synth newbie questions

Author analog video synth newbie questions

Hi folks,
I am in to eurorack audio modules and I currently use VDMX and madmapper for my video projection and mapping. I'm intrigued by analog video synthesis but I have a couple of questions:

Resolution-a lot of the analog video stuff seems to output at a low resolution-that's not an insult or anything. I would assume that since it's analog that the resolution would be infinite. How would I capture the video output of the analog synth to 1080p to then edit and use?

I'd really like to see some slow and organic type of analog video-can anyone point me to some? I really like this:

although I'd like to see even slower and more organic stuff than that...I know this sounds silly maybe and like I don't really want analog video synthesis if I'm complaining about the styles I often see (haha), but i can say that I love the actual idea of creating video output from voltage....

If I already have a decent audio synth, what are the bare essentials to get started with video synthesis? I'm guessing an oscilator that can get up to mHz....I have lots of modulation sources. Is an audio mixer like a Dubmix able to handle video?

Is RGB just like three different "voices" that are all handled individually?

Sorry for all the questions-so much to learn!

resolution
a video synth outputs PAL or NTSC resolution mostly

video's
check out the "post your video doodles" thread, lots of very nice examples there! (it is a sticky, top of the list)

starting point

You could get a LZX Visual Cortex and build from there.
or get a Gieskes 3TrinsRGB-1c, also a very nice video synth. (gateway drug)

You can also go the DIY route with the new LZX Cadet series. That's what i'm doing. (got the 3trinsRGB first, in kit form)
I'm now waiting until they release the VCO module, as i've ordered the system 21 cadet pack.

I second all that with the addition of building the 3trins to lzx adapter and some of those cv comparator board when/if they are still available.

For slow movement: there are several ways to achieve this. Since you already have a audio modular rig, you will be able to use all of it and determine what works best for you.
ex:typical shape/movement setup(audio end): oscillator->filter->scaler->video oscillator. Find the frequency on your audio oscillator that produces a stable shape then stare at it for several minutes to hours to see how stable it really is. repeat the process with different frequencies on your audio oscillator to determine what you like. for movement: modulate the filter various sources "lightly" for slower movement.
I use this same process for modulating the frequencies of the 3trins oscillators.
Any utility modules you may have like passive mults, attenuators, mixers, etc... will come in handy. some will work better than others but most all will be useful in some way you just have to try it.

i like the slow stuff.

you can get good 1080 results from upscaling on certain video cards. and the cortex can output 480i directly

That is beautiful! I also really like what is happening here in black and white around 5:40

DIY will have to be my method for now as funds are tight...I haven't found any panel and pcb kits or pcb layouts so I can etch my own board. I'm not so good at designing my own board just from a schematic...Any through-hole pcb's out there that I'm missing?

or order from LZX directly
