UPDATE [BUILD, WORKING; GO AHEAD]



The new version is build. Although I was a bit in a hassle and tried a few things, therefore its not the cleanest build, I can confirm that the Gerbers v2 on git are exactly working as expexted. So I think now is the time that anyone with intrest can use these files to manufacture boards.

I further provided a simple BOM with a few notes.The Language is somehow atrocious but i will invest some work in it later. I used this file too and i think component wise it is more or less error free. It is mostly THROUGH HOLE, and if you not feel confident to solder these 1206 bypass capacitors, you can try to substitute them. At reichelt I have seen IC sockets integrating tne mounting of a mlcc cap which can be used instead. Although one capacitor c15 has to be a 1206 SMD:

Further you find on Git my Proteus Project file. Feel free to modify or simulate resistor changes.

At last some files for panel designs are uploaded. I got mine from Schaeffer but I think its a bit of a rip off

Regarding the expenditure for one module. I payed approx

50€ Components at reichelt and tayda
3-10€ PCB
CEM CHIP 28€ on ebay
and 35€ hmmm..... for the panel

So a bit more than 100€ should get you there.

Ill tried to make a vid but I have not really the best hardware for it, i decided to have another go. My Personal judgement is that PWM and PULSE is the main highlight of this VCO as it is thicker and warmer than anything I created before.

Potential flaws in the design are that the LED has to be creatively mounted and there is a bit of a dead zone on the manual pwm knob.

I will take a rest from this project for a few weeks.

PS: The documents on git will be updated from time to time. The gerbers will stay ficed. Hope its workable, i will try to make them a bit better soon.

UPDATE 4

Ill actually ordered one test board in Germany which should arrive in 7 days, since I sadly have to go to hospital in 2 Weeks time and I definatly want to press this project through before that. Git is a bit messy still but once Rev 2. will be proved working, I'll fix it and provide a Video a detailed BOM a Cart a validated Boad and a Project File or what else is needed. For all of you which have been put off by the non pleasing look of my beloved wood prototype board, Ill uploaded some eyecandy and replaced the header with 3d Cad data of a preliminary Panel and the Board.

Revision 2 boards ordered. Should arrive in 2 weeks. Will upload additionally old revision 1 and the sync chicklet, which is needed for syncing to VCO with low output.

I have uploaded updated gerbers and schematics, aswell as 3d impressions of the board. I will give them another check tonight and send them to the fabhouse. I did not alter that much, therefore I have high hopes that they are working as good as the current version, without the need of a chicklet on the sync jack. Meanwhile Ill drop from time to time more demos here, maybe a vid, to eventual spark some interest. I would be happy if my work, would find a place in a few diy racks.

If you have any recommodations to make, now is the time for it.

Changes:

- Switched to 9mm Pots to create space for mounting holes (perhaps an stackable adapter with no wiring)

- Added Opamp-amplification on the Sync bus, should also offer some protection

Features:

Its basicly a Digisound/Cem Datasheet based design, totally standard:

Coarse/Fine
XFM/LFM
PWM manual and cv-able
Hardsync +/-

UPDATE

Since this is just a little Through hole board with pretty stock features and im not fond of doing the buisness side of things, this project will be based upon donations with free gerbers on github. Ill just take some time for testing and updating resistor values as I want to make sure that its working and enjoyable for evryone.

During the last weeks I'VE invested quite some time in making a board for the CEM3340. Its basicly the Datasheet design + a Waveshaper much like the Digisound VCO. Rev G Chips seem to have no issue with the lower voltage. So far the resulting sound is very pleasing and thick.

Ill fitted all on a packed PCB ( 100x50mm 2 Layer) board. Really stuffed but it has no noise isues and there are big ground planes on both sides. Possibly planning a adapter PCB once I have decided on a layout, so far it is a wiring project

I will provide more detail in the coming days, especially Sounds if someone is really interested in this.

Short Update.

After quite some testing. I can confirm that this board is working, As I did not have much time I couldn't capture the results but waveforms seems to be very clean, features fully working. Only issue for now is a slight variation in the level as the output voltages of the CEM are a bit less then expected at +12/-12 V. But I fixed most of it by changing some resistors. FM/PWM/Sync fully functional. Ill give it another go tommorow to double checl, but overall I am impressed how well the CEM cope with the change of supply voltage.

If anyone is interested in this topic I could provide Oscilloscope Screens, Basic Waveform Sounds etc.. I am not very well informed regarding other projects, just seen NLC has a slightly more expanded CEM VCO available. I would prepare a BOM and Building guide , aswell as a Panel DXF for a real panel , but only if there are a few people who would maybe like to buy a pcb otherwise I use them for my homebuild synths and won't care.

So basicly this is an interest check!!! What do you want me to provide? Sound Samples, Screens, as I have not done this before.

Otherwise not worth the effort as one the one hand I dont want to get commercial with these thingy and on the other hand (coincidently) similar projects seem to arise.

Ah and I forgot to mention, as a little speciality i have included a little expansion header, which should provide a squaresignal to and cv from an mcu based tuner/octave switch i am working on. But thats still work in progress and unsure.

It looks good, there are people who like thru-hole and wiring that will like it. A demo helps a lot as does expected prices.

This is the 4th CEM3340 VCO project announced in the past 2 weeks or so. No doubt there will be a few more too w00t but it does mean interest is spread pretty thinly.

Regarding prices. I am thinking about sharing my gerbers on github and make this project donation based. Maybe this would be the easiest solution. The whole advertising, producing etc stuff is not what I am after. I just hope that it will be used in a fair way and people actually donate a small amount for my work. The other option is of course to sell them. I think prices around 10 Euro per PCB sounds reasonable. Ill try to tweak and record today. Maybe I have some material this evening.

Here finally I really basic demo of waveform sounds. I did not convert any levels or anything, just pure natural recording. Calibrating the levels is much better know, but I think I need another go of meassuring and calculating. But as said just a bit resistor tweaking.

I furthermore have decided, that I will offer this project as donation ware. As I would be happy if people use it and put a bit of trust into it that small amounts of donations will be made. Further I am not fond of producing PCBs and then ship it to evryone.

I will upload gerbers on git once i finished tweaking

Hopefully its working now. I have cut the waveform clips a bit and uploaded some snippets of the cem in musical context from my tap recording yesterday evening and today.

Today I noticed two issues which I have to investigate further. The amount of FM seems a bit Frequency dependend and it feels definately different than on my Mallekos/Doepfer and unfortunatly the sync has now issues and stopped working, but it did yesterday. Maybe I desolderd and solderd this board already enough. For now Ill take a break

There's not such a track on soundcloud, so it's not an embed issue here, but the link which is not ok as the track was deleted.
The best is you find the track on soundcloud itself and then embed it the way you did in your first post (with "api" and so on in the embed tag).

I figured out what is the problem with the sync. Basicly I've just overread that the sync input requiers a level of 6V minimum. Which is just around the border of what my other Osc's providing. A VCA between in and output solved the issue. So for now I've build a little chicklet for the sync jack. It will on the one hand boost levels and on the other hand provide some additional input protection. I will integrate that into the board design. If I sacrifice the Led it will be a minor change.

Btw I am a non skiff user and with the current mounting the board is 50mm deep. I think I will expand it by 5, so wiring will be a little easier. Will this fit a skiff?

Hey folks!

Maybe being a little bit on a rant here. But if been in a few other forums and I know my english isn't that great but being a member here for 6 months I come to the conclusion this place is pretty dull. Honestly I think I am not an attention seeking whore and far away and dont even want to compete with other projects, no i am happy about evry bit of cool diy design i can get my hands on .But ive uploaded a few things and not recieved one comment on this matter. I do not mind if you are saying that sounds shit as f*** or please do it in another way. I am offering basicly a free design for evryone of "i know" a pretty stock vco, which is easy to solder, sounds good has all basic functions, is not horribly wide and easily modable. But perhaps you are all sitting at home infront of your 2 DPOs connected to your 4 Maths and are making sound. I was warned by a friend that the modular community is a pile of rich kids sitting infront of their towers of modules, but as for myself I was really happy about the DIY Spirit here, as I am basicly a very ill man, have a family and therefore not much of a penny for this. Ive earnt alot of my modules by building stuff and sell on on modular grid. No basicly I should stop whinging. But after 5 hours of routing a PCB for a community that ignores it I was kind of pissed off.

So dont take it to serious lol . Perhaps I am an attention seeking whore. I am happy that you are all producing such cool stuff. I will upload my gerbers tommorow as I am to tired today and will double check. Then I will send it to the fabhouse and present results.

PS: Do not take serious. " I was the first one with a new CEM design, Just f****** german customs delayed my shipment by 3 weeks, As they were thinking I am running a buisness with my 10 PCBs for 20 dollar". Nevermind good look to any others with new designs. That NLC CEM looks yummy.

BTW If I werent from Germany and be aware the horrible facsicst realtion, i would call my VCO the "VolksVCO". But I must come uo with something better and of course there is a A110

Your VCO project looks good and it's generous of you to share it.
I'm not a Eurorack guy though...

Not everyone in the modular community is a "rich kid" sat in front of a "tower of modules."

About your reaction: it's ok to expose your feeling.
I'm not on eurorack, but I'm following with interest your development with this VCO. Like many other threads where I'm always happy for the builder and his achievements, even if I'm not myself going to build this or that.
I hope you'll get more attention from people wanting to build one or another version with the 3340, so you can share impressions and ideas together thumbs up

Like you mentionned, the DIY community here is ok, no doubt.
I'm sure some will react and say what they think about this project, so you do not get too frustrated getting the impression nobody gives a shit about what you're sharing here.

Like Andrew mentionned earlier, 4 x designs with CEM3340 in a couple of weeks might minimize the interest or simply drive the focus in this direction instead of that. I think it's natural.
Also I'd say in general videos attract more attention.

It's cool yours in through-hole BTW.

@ batchas I want to move away from eurorack too. I am thinking about making a motm or mu version of this to start a new rack. At the moment just lacking technical details. Though it should be easy as it is 15/-15 so one could use basicly the stock design. If some like a can convert it to motm. but i dint know if thats really needed

Actually it is not completly through hole as i opted for 1206 bypass capacitors on the underside of the board. I think I wont change that as 1206 is really big and a piece of cake to solder. One not being into SMD should definately try this with the tag and reflow method. I promise that will not go wrong,
