Babaluma - Rogue Harmonicks

Post by Babaluma » Mon Sep 22, 2008 8:09 am

All older stuff, some with analogue/modular content, some done entirely in AudioMulch and therefore 100% digital.

Style is influenced by Krautrock, Industrial, Ambient, Psychedelic etc. There are very few beats. I encourage headphone listening in a dark room!

All comments appreciated!

Just got home from lovely Bologna and found these files. Listening right now! A perfect antidote to a slight hangover and being cooped up in an airplane for 2 hours.

Nice stuff.

thanks dudes, am looking forward to your opinions! i'd say coil were the biggest influence on most of that era of my tunes.

i'll post some more recent stuff soon, but i've been held back waiting for my 606 so i can do more techno based musick.

that's about how far i've made it. almost done with Drone In A

really love the overall concept of these tracks. whether they were intended to fit together or not they totally do.

i'd be cool with a cd of this. but probably even more cool with a cd of your newer stuff. let us know if/when you release something.

thanks for listening guys.

i'd be happy to send you a cd kwote, just pm me! either that or i could upload the mastered .wav files for a couple of weeks.

i'd like to explain the final track "maggie", if i may. it was originally made by my friend graham, he passed it on to our other friend gav who processed/remixed things further. i then received it and did a crazy m/s remix through the modular (split the stereo file into m and s components and put each through different modular patches, then recombined the m/s signals into a stereo signal), then added the weird computer vocal whispers and the balinese bamboo flute as played by my friend yamato. a bit of mastering and it was done, sounding very little like the original track! the thing about the modular controlled m/s processing patch is that it enables you to do crazy stuff like have the stereo field suddenly huge and wide and then reduced to mono, reverb flying in and out all over the place correlated with filter cuttoff etc. please listen on nice headphones for the full effect!

01 Tsunami Tidal Waves (Power Ambient Remix)
The trickling water toward the end is my favorite part.
Is that sampled or synthesized?
02 Harmonick Series
This is very pretty, but it would be even better if it was alternating with some other sequences in a song structure.
03 Hymn For John
The bird :chicken: vocalization samples are a nice touch, and it is nice when the bass line kicks in too.
Honestly, I felt that clean tone of the main synth line was the weakest part of the piece.
I hope you don't take that as a jab; merely constructive criticism from an opinionated asshole.
04 Drone In A
I liked this one best out of the drones.
06 Icaros
I like the human sounds, and the drums that come in half way through.
These types of sounds add so much movement and character to the drones. Very inspiring.
08 BONUS TRACK: Babaluma, Decadnids & Elf - Maggie (Yamato Flute Mix)
This one is probably my favorite out of the lot. Nice work! :hail:

thanks for the comments and no offence taken, it's always extremely positive to receive heartfelt feedback of any kind!

to answer your questions:

i) the trickling water sounds at the end of tsunami tidal waves are three tracks of my old tropical fish tank miced up and swirled around in stereo space with reverb.

ii) agreed, it's just a little etude/between track really.

iii) not sure what birds you mean, not the tropical frogs? i really like the synth line but you're right, it is very clean sounding. that was a live fat controller/modular jam. was going for a more traditional tangerine dream '75 type vibe.

iv) thanks! there are japanese porn samples hidden in that one! :flamey:

vi) thanks.

viii) thanks again! i don't know why more people don't experiment with m/s processing, it's certainly not hard when you have freeware plugins such as voxengo's msed (that's what i use).

I've listened to half of this so far on my way into work this morning. I can really hear the Coil influence and I love the drone track I paused on. I'll write back when I've listened to the entire thing. Definitely looking forward to hearing your more recent modular work, too.

thanks again.

there's a more recent drone track from last year for download here:

http://www.darkflame.hermetech.net/Musi ... pDrone.mp3

i think i uploaded it to modularsynth.net, but not here, so you might have heard it before. if not please enjoy!

it's more of a dark style, vidna obmana/steve roach/lustmord/robert rich inspired piece. lots and lots of modular. i'm currently working on a spoken word version with a stream of consiousness alan moore text about h.p. lovecraft's cthulhu. :cthulhu:

to be honest i haven't really been able to finish any other tracks since then, due to family commitments and my job etc, but i really hope to be able to complete some fax style techno once my 606 arrives.

I did listen to it then and enjoyed it quite a bit!
