ANTS! Analog semi-modular synth

I hope this is OK here. Not an eurorack but inspired by it and using the same voltages, so 100% compatible with it (not fitting inthe eurorack rails).

We have released Ants!. An analog semi-modular synth in a desktop format. Retail price 480€.

The synth have:

- 4 V/OCT triangle cores oscillators. 2 of them switchable to LFO.

- 2 LFOs: 2 low frequency oscillators with triangle, square and pulse outputs.

- VCF: switchable analog 12dB low-pass / 6db high-pass filter with resonance. At high input volumes it distort the signal. Self oscillating.

- 2 A/R envelopes: 2 attack - release envelopes with manual and external controls. Working at different times.

- Mixer: 3 input mixer.Accepts AC or DC signals.

- 2 VCAs.

- White noise source.

- Sample and Hold.

- AND gate.

- MIDI to CV.

It sound really good, at least we think that smile. The idea was to make a basic modular system for an affordable price. Now the project is at Kickstarter. We need your support to make it a reality. Please, support us. Thanks!!

That sounds really nice! Great work!
Zerius
Really nice indeed
EarlJemmings
Yeah, real cool.
>0-coast only has one standard oscillator, but has great form factor
>this has a similar form and four oscillators as well as vcas, mixer, etc.
>perfect pairing?
Zymos
Looks cool, but if it isn't Eurorack, this is the wrong forum for it...

Muchiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiisima suerte con el hormiguero! nanners

Like the sound of the filter smile

are you saying the LFO's work independently of the osc or you switch the osc to LFO mode so it's one or the other..?

I always was a bit annoyed that most modular oscillators didn't allow you to use the module as an osc and LFO at the same time, so the LFO was independent and had it's own speed/pitch knob,.. that way you could use the LFO as a clock source for say a sequencer, and the osc, well as a sound source...would make perfect sense in small systems so your osc is a clock as well as as osc.. cool

Ummmm.., that's called 'two separate modules'.
strangegravity
Nice, the filter sounds fantastic. Make it Euro compatible, it cant be that hard. slap a ribbon connector on the back and line the mount holes up to xHP. Options only increase sales..... just sayin
mskala
The usual term for this kind of device, with separate sections in a single device that can't be expanded by adding one module at a time, and normalled connections overridden by patching, is "semimodular." No insult intended and I hope your project is successful, but calling it a "modular synth" borders on false advertising because that term has a specific meaning, and this isn't it.
plankton
Thanks for the comments. It seems that the project will be a reality! smile

We know that making eurorack rail compatible will make it more attractive, but there is no way that it fit inside the rails. The panel and PCB are too big.

@mskala no intention on false advertising. Initially it was not normalled and the idea was that it could be expanded by using other eurorack modules as it uses the same standard. But you're totally right. We will change it. Thanks

We're recording more video demos. We will publish it soon
plankton
Oh, if the moderators consider that this should be in another forum please move it. Thanks

Main post updated with new demo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MXCr2jzrwdY

"in depth" demos next week.
ChappySinclair
Looks really cool and sounds great! I also like that the panel is angled.
EATyourGUITAR
cool synth, wrong sub forum.
matttech
Great decision on adding a sync input. I was just looking at it and thinking it seemed awesome, but "if only it had sync on one of the vcos"

I'd certainly be interested in stocking this when it's ready

Good luck! thumbs up
plankton
Good! smile

New streth goals. An extra midi output, sync on the LFO, A/D envelope on envelope1, and other features.

8 new videos also. An intro to the synth, 4 generative patches, making classic drums, using it as an fx processor and "in depth" video (this one really boring, but necessary.)

Merry Christmas!

Sync/reset on one LFO = great move too thumbs up
plankton
Last 48h! We will make all the features of the "stretch goals" a reality on Ants!. An extra CV out, selectable MIDI channel, sync on LFO1, A/D on env1, sine wave on one LFO, attenuverters on the mixer and the patch book. Now it's time to work hard!

"Ants!" update (11/01/17):

The design and implementation of the new features is going smoothly. So far:

- Hardware implementation of the "MIDI in" at the back with a DIP switch to select the channel; a second CV output at the front and a LED for GATE signal receiving. The software needs to be updated.

- Sine wave added on LFO·Y (replacing the triangle wave).

- "Sync in" on OSC·Y and LFO·X. We made a short demo. Note that these are triangle core oscillators so the sync is not reseting the wave like in a sawtooth core osc. This is a very rare kind of sync, and we like it! In the demo we just tweak the knobs, no CV inputs are used.

More updates comming soon!

Anyone tried this yet?
matttech
It's not out yet but shouldn't be much longer.

Have got an order heading my way as soon as it is released w00t
plankton
There are more than 100 units already around, and as Matttech says there will be new units with some retailers by the end of this week.

Here is a video from a new user:

And we are working on the patching tool. Soon it will be with the final version:
