Euclidean & genetic algo sequencers?

Author Euclidean & genetic algo sequencers?

I'm thinking this is the right side of the forum for this.

I've been playing round with a couple of Euclidean sequencers lately, namely rhythm necklace. Which I'm finding great fun but really limited. Most of what I've seen only dips it's toe in Euclidean and doesn't really take it deeper as a method and sequencer. Most seem a bit gmmiky or novelty. So.... Could anyone recommend one that goes that bit further, inclusive accents, presets, preset morphing, pitches, slide, etc? That kind of thing.

Preferably something doesn't require me to own MAX/MSP.

Also is there anything out there that uses genetic algorithms for the creation of rhythm? I've seen various papers around on the net but nothing in the way of software.

Cheers!

You can't go wrong with MAX here. If you don't want to spend money, take a look at Pure Data. It's equally powerful, but free and widely used in academia, too. There are tons of patches available.
Some random examples:

Or just do your own custom sequencer in pd, it's not that hard. smile

Cheers! I'd forgotten all about PD. I am actually considering building my own sequencer. I did a couple of probability based step sequencers in MAX years and years ago but I think if I opened it again it'd be like starting from scratch and I know how absorbing it can get. Anyway, I'll take a look at PD thanks.

On that note, if anyone has got some interesting links to stuff that uses genetic algorithms and Euclidean it would be appreciated.

if you, by chance, already have ableton live then check this out

Have you tried this guy? Tons of fun. http://defectiverecords.com/cyclic/index2.html

I just purchased http://www.defectiverecords.com/cyclic/index2.html

Cyclic

And it's pretty darn cool.
I have been looking for a Software "patterning" if you will to work inside Abelton to control my expert sleepers rig and this worked wonderfully in the demo

Oh, this looks terrific! Thanks for sharing.

Cyclic is really cool and seems ideal, but i had a really hard time getting it to properly recognize my VSTs without crashing.

if they charged a more but made it 64-bit and useable as a midi VST plugin, it would be amazing.

Go with pure data. It's great for this stuff, and it's free. It's a bit less polished feeling than Max, but I got up to speed with it in no time after a month with Max.

Very late follow up - I'm Cyclic's creator (together with original concept generation by Olivier from Mutable Instruments).

I hope to have a Win 64 bit version available soon (free update). And sorry re: the VST challenges - I'm at the mercy of Cycling 74's ability to host VST plugins, and it just doesn't like some plugins out there, especially if they're a bit on the older side...

And sadly, no ability to convert it into a VST plugin itself, as Cycling removed that ability when it stopped supporting Pluggo many years ago. If I get some time in the future I might consider creating a Max for Live version of it though, at least to help those who use Ableton...
