[available] Serge Triple+ Waveshaper (TWS) for euro by R*S

Post by nordlead » Fri Mar 03, 2017 12:58 pm

The R*S Serge range is growing, now including the new Serge Triple+ Waveshaper (TWS+):

Image

An additional (4th) waveshaper has been added (right after the first / bottom waveshaper) that can be dialed in smoothly using the +1 knob. Turned down (CCW) the bottom section acts as in the original (as if that additional waveshaper would not exist). Turned up (CW) the bottom section is actually 2 waveshapers in series.

wow sounds and looks wonderful!
I will add it to the rest of my euro serge rig in the next future, is it 18hp like the VCM?

Thanks nordlead :tu:

Sounds gorgeous, so thick and "orange"!

The timbre in the seconde-to-last bit pretty much matches my "ideal" or "dream" timbre, where it sounds like the sound is made of wood and copper!

I was under the impression that "serge" is a completely different format, but I take it that these are serge modules for the eurorack format?

Well done, it sounds great.

It's not like I've done an A/B test but listening to the clip above you could easily convince me it's from an STS Serge Waveshaper.

Yes, 18hp, and very slim (about 30mm deep)

Yes, originally Serge is 4U with banana jacks. Random*Source offers a range of 4U modules and panels, but has also brought a number of Serge modules to Eurorack - like now the TWS+ - in cooperation and under license from Serge: http://randomsource.net/serge_euro

Thanks! :tu: However, you'd not be able to get all of this from a STS (or original) Triple Waveshaper as the R*S version actually has a 4th waveshaper that's not simply ON or OFF (i.e. linked or not linked), but can be faded into. That means you can blend from 1 stage to 2 (or from 2 to 3 ... or from 3 to 4) :-)

How is it compared to TWF toppo?

Afaik, the TWF is a wavefolder not a waveshaper, it folds back the peaks of wave when a threshold is reached. This TWS+ morphs a saw/tri to a sine shape.

the Twf folds a saw to a sine so i am not sure what the difference is in that regard.

Now I'm curious too.. :hmm:
I don't have a TWF, my assumption was based on this clip:

but reading the TWF Modulargrid description confirms what you are saying about saw to sine shaping. I think alle 3 stages works the same, right?

Yes well in that video you get the output of all three stages of processing.

If you see in the description here:
http://www.toppobrillo.com/TWF/TWF.html
each stage can take a tri/saw and derive a sine from it.

Now if it is a folder or a shaper i can't say i understand what or how they are different in that regard, in the time-continuous domain at least...
In dsp it is quite obvious for me :)

Thanks for response :tu:
This other post in another recent similar post cleared it up very well for me.
About folder/shaper category I guess wavefolders are just a subset of waveshapers.

that audio demo by r*s sounds great! be interested to see if anyone has any video demos of the module when they have it, to get a better idea of the sounds going in and patching, and to compare it to the twf

Just got one aswell. Still needs to be build (not by myself) once it arrives.
Until then I´d really appreciate to hear (or even see) a few additional examples if somebody got it already because I couldn´t find anything besides the soundcloud example + videos of the original Serge modul obviously missing the 4th shaper.

Have these shipped yet?

I haven't received mine, and emails to R*S have gone unanswered (which is unusual, they have been very responsive in the past).

I don´t know where you ordered (seems like at R*S directly?), then I got one here from Thonk. Like said, still needs to be built.
Btw are there any additional demos avalaible by now?

These sound amazing imo. Built two for others and planning to build more. Let me know if anyone needs one built. (Belgium based)

so i'm really wondering about that option to have jumpers for each section, so the outputs can be switched between AC or DC. the manual says that it's set up for DC output by default. and it recommends to not set up the jumpers and just leave it that way.

so isn't it kind of weird to have the output, an audio signal, being all positive voltage? aren't typical audio signals supposed to be AC? so if i input an AC saw wave oscillator, with positive and negative voltage, and get a sine coming out, it's going to be shifted to all positive voltages?

isn't that kind of bad for audio signals? it just means i have a huge dc offset now, doesn't it? i feel like i must be misunderstanding something here. haven't built mine yet to see for myself. can anyone explain this?
