Author recommend me your drone if...

Dear Wigglers,

I dig drone [a particular "sort of drone"], and I found out quite a few of you are recording slow stuff. I try to seek you in secrecy, visit your soundcloud/bandcamp pages and give an ear, especially ones who mention ******* smile
Sometimes I find pleasant sounds, though I admit being rather picky... even worse this weekend I have a cold, am cranky and sleepy, no energy for searching but a lot of time to listen to... Pehaps you could just recommend yourself?

Disregarding what a "drone" is, I like drone that:
-- is lengthy (a 5min drone is not a drone, it's a jingle wink)
-- lacks rythm (beating happens, but no techno/outside-the-dream-theatre-thing)
-- lacks melody (no intervals, unless so slow that hard to notice)
-- preferably lacks intense reverbation and über-sweet harmonies (no naive ambient)

I changed my mind, I will not provide any examples to make it more interesting... (that's why particular surname got hidden in the second sentence).

If you record drone (or know someone who does) and think it has the above-mentioned characteristics, share a link to some materials we can listen to (please do so even if I already follow you on sc, I assume other drone-heads might be interested as well!).
Thanks in advance, have a nice Sunday!

Since no one replied yet and i am new here on this forum i thought i might As well reply. The funny thing is i started a small modulair setup 2 years ago and since then i read more about people making drones. I honestly still haven't looked up what that suppose to mean, drone music. My interpetation is a ever evolving sound(scape) that takes you ...
Perhaps it doesn't sound like anything you asked for but what the * . There is a stop button.
It's a one take recording and not mastered or anything like that. Curious what you think. Nb It does has reverb, sorry.

sweet jesus, somebody answered! It's peanut butter jelly time!
surely, there is no definition for drone music, that is why i dubbed it "sort of" and provided [still very obscure] characteristics.
listening for the third time, it is nice, thank you! non-jingle length, rythm-less, free from melody, not overly-reverbated, neither over-sweet. it is quite dynamic, "but that's fine" wink definitely fits the stuff I asked for.
nb I did not mean "no reverb" [that would be perfect], just not a "lustmord clone" (with all the respect for mr Brian) as these are easy to find and currently are out of my interest.
dear wigglers, do not be afraid to post your stuff!

I like drone in the vein you've described, too. I think my album 'collection' fits the bill, especially tracks 2 and 3:

[bandcamp width=350 height=470 album=2229127649 size=large bgcol=ffffff linkcol=0687f5 tracklist=false]

Most of my catalog and soundcloud tracks might interest you, as well!

"electro-music Spring Equinox 2010 live set" is fenomenal [s]https://soundcloud.com/cebec/electro-music-spring-equinox-2010-live -set[/s]
"collection" is awesome, very "time-machine'y". digging deeper...
btw how do you arrange this panning, is it a voltage controlled mixer?

Thank you!

I love 'Time Machines'. Guinness ftw!

Yes, it's usually a combination of a voltage controller mixer like the Serge UAP or DCSM and the Dual Phaser.

Thanks. I was mainly inspired by a new Vintage Synth Lab AWM-3, which turns out to be a lot of fun.

haebbmaster impressive machine!

thank you both for the drone!

meanwhile I found some wigglers who do nice drones as defined above:

[s]https://soundcloud.com/zeitdehner/rap-typac[/s]
https://soundcloud.com/zeitdehner/rap-typac -- a cool drone with colley/radigue-sque "mechanical working" in the background. feast to the ear!

[s]https://soundcloud.com/presentabsent/boundaries-1[/s]
https://soundcloud.com/presentabsent/boundaries-1 -- can't believe this one has so few listens! a little reverby and dynamic but nevertheless awesome.

[s]https://soundcloud.com/orderofthetranslucentsquare/170411a[/s]
https://soundcloud.com/orderofthetranslucentsquare/170411a -- mechanical elves playing space sitar. give us more of this!

[s]https://soundcloud.com/angelovicentejr/phobos-deimos[/s]
https://soundcloud.com/angelovicentejr/phobos-deimos -- "time machines" in space. sometimes a little too much is happening to my taste, but hey, it's SPACE.

[s]https://soundcloud.com/analogdoom/new-d-a-a-d[/s]
https://soundcloud.com/analogdoom/new-d-a-a-d -- mr Alex is wildly recognized on this forum and the piece is dark and drony.

[s]https://soundcloud.com/pirx_modular/tangerine-drone-004[/s]
https://soundcloud.com/pirx_modular/tangerine-drone-004 -- mr Piotr on his diy fenomental tangerine synth. the drones are a little short and rich in content, but still extrordinarily pleasant!

[s]https://soundcloud.com/ikjoyce/the-self-the-one-the-you-or-me[/s]
https://soundcloud.com/ikjoyce/the-self-the-one-the-you-or-me -- another well recognized wiggler; I whis mr Ian makes more drones, it's perfect.

[s]https://soundcloud.com/manresa/satish-dhawan[/s]
https://soundcloud.com/manresa/satish-dhawan -- pure, tasty minimalism. the only complain I could have: too short ("six twelve" is longer and delicious).

[s]https://soundcloud.com/j-l-maire/dogon-cara-a-cassette[/s]
https://soundcloud.com/j-l-maire/dogon-cara-a-cassette -- JL is the most dynamic on the list, and this seems to be his slowest track. almost noise, and at the end gets freejazzy. nice (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-jHzdMo-YCc).

[s]https://soundcloud.com/mikelynch/01-mourning-dead-rock-stars[/s]
https://soundcloud.com/mikelynch/01-mourning-dead-rock-stars -- classical drone. bathing in slowly changing major chord.

[s]https://soundcloud.com/dronefactory/cosmic-waves[/s]
https://soundcloud.com/dronefactory/cosmic-waves -- as above + in the end "an Adnos II suprprise" wink

thanks to the authors as well! we're not worthy

wonder if that many embedded sc pieces will work...

I came in here to listen to the drones, and was surprised to find that my own 'Boundaries 1' had already been posted. Thanks for the plug drcz!!

Everything I've listened to in this thread has been superb. This is exactly what I look for in 'drone'--long-form, non-melodic insights into the abyss. Great idea farming these tracks all into one place!

Btw,drcz I've been loving your work on Soundcloud--super lovely stuff. If you don't mind my asking, what kind of setup have you been using for your 'proba' pieces?

Oh, and before I forget, here's another drone that I think meet's your criteria (I just posted this in the other drone thread as well):

Fastus
Esp in the middle, this hits a drone aspect of pure suspension, bit of Asian bell & garden feel:

Also wanted to mention an earlier Pirx Modular (drone#4 was posted earlier) this one I heard ages ago and absolutely loved it!

drcz
Huron, Fastus -- thanks! I would actually consider your pieces (the ones I did explore so far) as closer to berlin school -- I like them a lot, though containing intervals, as a whole compositions they significantly deviate from the characteristics mentioned.

Asymptote thank you! [I understand, love my works too]. I heard (and be-liked) orchid as soon as you uploaded it smile
As of setup everything from this year is Doepfer A-143-4, A-124, A-103, A-118, 2×A-138, Dark Energy II; dreadbox divide (eww, digital crap -- will get rid of it soon); phonic am220 mixer; recorded in a single take on tascam dr-05.

-- speaking of which, since last night all drone-heads are invited for some juicy orange picking https://soundcloud.com/drcz/sets/oranges-from-the-estate.

That there is an ideal no-nonsense drone rig!

a bit offtopic but since it's a gear forum:
I have dark energy as that's how I started modular adventure 3 months ago, but it has a bit too many features I don't use; also it has a little too sensitive knobs, the filter "likes" to crackle with higher resonance, and the crosstalk with LFOs is quite audible. I am thinking of replacing it with third small case with A-143-3 (because saw waves are sexy!). I also miss more lowpass filters, so it becomes clear what the 3rd box will contain.
Also I feel a bit guilty of using a divider (it is interesting for non-drone experiments, like "reading" frequency from piezo attached to eg guitar) but that is a rather personal thing: digital electronics is sacrum, domain of words and spirits (computational processes), while drone music is profanum, domain of body and sensations. I like to have these separate. Of course with the third box I will no longer need it.
I believe drone gear [at least for the patient person, but I don't think impatient ones are into drone anyway] is all about oscillators and filters, plus a mixer... I am though very interested in counterarguments to that!
kristian
i guess filters help but you dont necessarily need them with some modules like Telharmonic or Sheep for instance where you can shape those overtones nicesly.

I'm listening to this today and it's excellent drone that I think you'll enjoy:

Jaap Vink - s.t. on Recollection GRM:

Here's something from yesterday.
First thing I've posted in ages. It doesn't exactly live up to all of your mentioned guidelines, but whatever, it's drone to some degree... Don't be fooled by the Sharp arp lead. Cheers!

I got my copy in the mail yesterday, and it's excellent! Amazing that Vink is not more widely known.
