dubplate cutting in the USA |
br>ObfuscatedVisuals |
br>I'm considering getting some dubplates cut and I was looking online and noticed that most of the places seem to be in the UK. The only one I found in the US was customrecords.com.
Anybody have any recommendations or experience with any services in the US or UK? br> br> |

br>Remember there are two different types of dub plate nowadays:
The cheap ones are cutting plastic discs using (usually) a modified Technics turntable with a cutting head. If you are lucky they have tweaked the RIAA curve to try and get a better sound. They do not sound amazing but are OK and will last a long time.
The expensive ones are cutting a real acetate which is a lacquer-coated metal disc. The sound quality is equal to that of a real record but it will start to wear out quite quickly. br> br> |

Ah right..
Aardvark does lacquers
http://www.aardvarkmastering.com/dubs.htm
$65.00 for each twelve inch record.
Just can't figure out why the prices at Custom Records are so high... I guess I can't assume because the sound better than anybody else with a confirmation from somebody who has used them br> br> |

br>Not sure if they advertise it, but I remember a record lathe of another LatheTroll being sold last year to Control (I think). Anyone seen it in the store, or was it a personal purchase? br> br> |

If you want to have a record pressed you need to get a lacquer cut but you can also get dubplates or lathe cuts for lower quality and short runs of records for less than getting a record pressed. Or if you are are a turntablist you might want a few records of your own material to scratch.
I'm not going to comment on whether or not any of the above is nostalgic br> br> |

br>I'm also looking for the place that can cut dubplate in U.S. I checked all the URL link above. This is a informative and nice post. Thank you !
Aardvark is reasonably priced and seems like a good place to try, but if there's any other place in this price range ($65 for 12inch acetate dubplate) I'd like to know.... Anyone? br> br> |

br>These aren't dubplates but I recently noticed that https://www.duplication.ca/ is doing mono 7-10" lathes and picture disc lathes and seem like reasonable prices for them br> br> |

Well I got the lathes from them.. not really pleased with the results. The cuts themselves I guess are okay although the amount of surface noise seems to vary greatly between the cuts.
The bigger problem is that I opted for the round pictures discs and they screwed up more than half of them and they are trying to write it off as just being the way it is because they are hand made. If had known that this level of sloppy workmanship was involved I would not have ordered them.
So the two problems are when they cut the discs to make them round the paper inbetween the two layers is getting chewed up and particles from this are getting trapped between the sheets. I may beable to make these look better but I shouldn't have to right? If had I known I would not have gotten them cut and they'd be square.
The other problem is the spray adhesive they are using is pretty inconsistent and there is spotting. I could tolerate the spotting but on many of the copies it's turned gray.
Also on a few of the discs there is random crap stuck between the discs and in some cases bits of plant matter! br> br> |

Damn, I am sorry to hear that! The only thing I ever got myself from them is a bunch of tapes made quite a few years back, and a friend and I went halfs on a pressing of some 7". They weren't perfect but they weren't horrific either. Then again, i'm not defending them shipping out vinyls with bowl packs stuck in the vinyls br> br> |

Heh..yeah for real.. I might beable to rescue the chewed up edges by cutting off some of the edge as there's more than a quarter inch before the track starts but the discoloration from the adhesive is hopeless. br> br> |
