This thread is an attempt to have clean and focussed collection of music made with the wonderful Make Noise Morphagene. If we can make this just 10% as awesome as the 'Phonogene Compositions' thread, we succeeded.

Please re-post the tracks you shared in the regular MG thread.

To make a start, here are some instagram videos that either use the MG as the only sound source or have it playing along with the whole system. Hope you enjoy them.

Thanks for starting this thread. "Phonogene Compositions" is a long-time favorite.

I have a ton of MG-tagged posts on my instagram:

you'll also find original material and reposts on the Make Noise Insta:

And here are some one-takes that all utilize the Morphagene in some way with synth material as the source. Some are recordings I made during beta testing, and none were really planned for release, but I released them to help raise some money for the ACLU when Bandcamp did their profit-matching promotion. I'll still donate any earnings that come in from this one:

So I just wrote this piece this afternoon. It was composed around a repeating phrase from one of my former pieces chopped up in the new Make Noise Morphagene eurorack module. It is also a musical rendering of last night's dream. Hope you enjoy! smile

Sorry for turning into a serial poster, but I'm having a lot of crazy fun with this module. Here's a quick drone sort of thing I threw together on Friday evening. The only sound source is the Morphagene, with some filtering and reverb from the MMG and Erbe Verbe respectively. The original sample is the Star Spangled Banner. The patch is pretty flexible and will turn almost any musical or tonal sample into atmospheric spa music instantaneously.

nosollution
Morphagene is providing the drone. MG CV Out > Rings 2 Op FM damping input; a few notes are sequenced into Rings. Drums are a combination of the Black Mambo and Glassed kits in Maschine.

An attempt to do something other than granular ambient soundscapes (nice though they are). This one is a glitchy mash-up of two sample loops, one being played by Radio Music, the other by Morphagene:

Yes, that's the morphagene playing along with the 4ms SMR (bell sounds).
The morphagene is filtered heavily in the beginning. I'm opening the filter every now and then.

Jericho, I really liked your piece.

Thanks, from what I can remember...

Patch started from setting up a basic Krell style patch on the 0-coast (explained in better detail here) the only difference being I used a channel of the Doepfer quantiser between the random & 1v per octave input to keep things in key. The 0-coast's audio is then patched into the Morphagene along with 0-coast the clock signal controlling Morphagene's record CV. A trigger out from the quantiser is patched into the Morphagene's splice input. The audio then goes into Clouds.

I sent random pulse from the turing machine into the 0-Coast's envelope trigger and the envelope out is patched into Cloud's freeze input which causes it to randomly hold sections of the audio in it's freeze buffer, the length of which can be adjusted with the envelope.

I used a stackable to take a copy of the EOC output from the 0-coast slope section into the Turing Machine's clock. The turing machine was patched into the second quantiser channel and then into the Erebus to create a second melody (you hear this panned to the right)

The 3rd melody is one I programmed into the Microbrute's in built sequencer and used a random pulse out from the turing machine to trigger each new step (this is heard panned to the left)

The audio is then sent into ableton on separate tracks, a little chorus and a lot of reverb were added there.

There's probably a few patches missed from description that but should give you some ideas if you have similar modules.

Here's a mellow groove I whipped up this evening, using the Morphagene sort of in the background for the most part... it takes some discipline to keep the module from jumping out front-and-center! The sample is some public domain recordings of a Bach keyboard piece, and serves to make some plucked chords and the occasional wash of ambient bliss.

Experimental sound design using the Morphagene. I loaded a bunch of ambient sounds (vocals, bird calls, hand saws, etc). Over time it gets weirder and weirder to the point where it started to sound like a bird call from a rare alien cyborg species in a sci fi film.

I'm turning into a serial poster on this thread. I'm just in a Morphagene groove atm.

Here is my first foray into the wild world of time lag accumulation. It made the solitary sound of the DPO sound extraordinarily rich. With a layer of reverb, you have instant ambient goodness!

That's pretty nifty! What are you using for the audioreactive visuals? It fit the composition quite nicely.

This track features Morphagene quite a bit. Throughout most of the tune there is a pluck/string-like melody that is made with MI Rings, the Morphagene samples, chops and transposes these sounds and creates kind of a counter-melody. As it fades in and out, it gets more or less dominant but it is there pretty much the whole time.

Great sounds! Went from sceptic to believer through this thread smile

Most of the examples I've heard (and liked) uses source material from outside the modular system (i.e samples) and use the morphagene as a texture/granular sampler of sort. How easy and intuitive is it to work with more precise slicing etc? Or is that just not the purpose of the module?

One of the improvements as compared against the original Phonogene is that you can now edit samples in Reaper and save them in a format that the Morphagene can read, including 'Splice' markers. This opens up a lot of the conventional sample slicing techniques, provided you are happy to set things up away from the modular system. My demo 'Airwaves' used this technique.

[soundcloud url="https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/319729575" params="auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_use r=true&show_reposts=false&visual=true" width="100%" height="450" iframe="true" /]

'Splicing' manually in the module works reasonably well, just like it did on the Phonogene. At first, I didn't understand the need to set the Morph knob to get a smooth loop, and I wasn't able to get Splices to work properly (they seemed to drop in the wrong place) but once I got this sorted, it was Ok, particularly if you slow things right down to get the splice markers right.

It's probably true that the Morphagene is not designed specifically to act as a sample slicer, and the granular stuff is more interesting to me, but it can be done. My demo 'Tribal Dance #4' uses manual splices:

[soundcloud url="https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/323210344" params="auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_use r=true&show_reposts=false&visual=true" width="100%" height="450" iframe="true" /]

Thank you. The Voltage Multistage (with Tempi/Random Sampling doing a random reset every so often) is at the heart of the patch controlling the DPO, Harmonic Oscillator, Mutant Bass Drum (offscreen) and Akemie's Taiko (offscreen) and then through the Morphagene, which is is modulated by 4 Pressure Points "presets" and the Planar is controlling the SOS so its switching back and forth between the patch and a recording of the patch. Pressure from the Pressure Points also modulates Morph on the Morphagene. The weird panned noise is the Piston Honda through a Molekular patch. Cheers.

Used the splice trigger function to set up some generative playback on a spliced version of the audio from the deleted "Room Above the Convenience Store" scene in Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me. Other modules used are noted in the description of the video, but the Morphagene was definitely the nerve center of the patch.

Got Morphagene yesterday. This is from an audiobook sample with prepared splice marks between phrases. Genesize minimal with very subtle modulation from Wogglebug which also modulates slide. Sloooooowly. Every 8th clock next splice. Fed into Strymon trio (Phaser -> TapeDelay -> Shimmer).

Thanks! Its Morphagene looping a simple melody from Rings into MMM filter, then DLD and some Big Sky Reverb. I used Frames to modulate gene size, organize and slide. The original recording was 1 1/2 hours and I just sat there turning the big glowing Frames knob the whole time. There's a bit of Minitaur/MURF action in there too.

Nice sounds and video too p woods!!
richc90
Really lovely p woods. What's going on in the patch? And what sort of piano sounds do you throw into the MG? I used to love putting Arvo Part loops into the PG. Thinking about it, I should try that with the MG...

Really nice patches, p love and Struggle - excellent work! applause

Thanks guys!

Richc90 It's a simple patch really. So there's SMR doing the "drone" or whatever in the background, with some modulation. Elements doing the main bass-line, and last but not least is MG chopping up some piano samples I found on freesound. The MG outoput is also fed into clouds which is doing some full stereo granular stuff.

I like to reduce the samples to really low quality to get that old sound. Sometimes I even do mono. Really cool idea to use some Pärt for source material. Your tracks are Dead Banana so you gotta be right.

I've been using the MG as a great texture - generator to go in the back of my suicide-hop tracks. I wouldn't call them compositions exactly.

MG is controlled by a Brains + PP - the output is run to the main outs and to a VCA into a tempo synced Echophone. The MGs CV out is inverted and run to the VCA and the echophone feedback - this way as the MG gets quieter it will add to the MGs feedback loop... which is cleared as the MG gets louder and more silence is fed to the loop.
[s]https://soundcloud.com/reodjectz/work-zone-lobster[/s]

Another day of practice: The opening spooky-ness is the MG running a real of E352 sounds (a live version of the same sounds is playing as well).

The MG is heavily sequenced through. Using the same FB trick as "work zone lobster"

Love this machine more and more every day. I run it through a real tape machine and it just sounds crazy good.

Managed to create some guitar-like sounds on elements, and fed it into morphagene and clouds (RIP). Added some bass. Nothing else needed, the morphagene really does a lot of goodness if you push it.

Did some audio-reactive visuals too.

Loving some of the compositions in this thread. For those experienced with the module, would it be a waste to get it with the intention of only manipulating sounds within my rack or acoustic instruments? I'm not big on SD cards and loading samples and fiddling with things like that. I could see myself loading some choir or string sounds but that's about it.

I would say definitely worth it - that's what it is good at. However, the SD card is useful just for saving what you are working on so you can load it again after you have been working on something else - even if you never use it for pre-loading samples.

Like at 3 seconds in, the rapid repetition of that metallic timbre gives a sound akin to scraping that massages my brain.

That's the physical scraping of a cymbal with a special metal stick that has a thin metal wire wrapped around it, which produces the scraping sound

Might be a bit of a "vanilla" application of the module, but figured I would post anyways.

I started with a sample from a John Coltrane tune and was going to build a patch around it, but the Erbe-Verb and the Morphagene alone was very relaxing and I ended up just sitting and thinking and listening for a bit.

I suppose Coltrane is doing most of the work in this patch, but hopefully you'll find it relaxing as I did! smile

I am running a very slow sequence from the Doepfer A-155 into the varispeed control and modulating most else with the Wogglebug. The Morphagene is then fed into the Erbe-Verb, with some modulation from the Octocontroller. From there it's sent to the ALM MUM M8 Filter, which is being modulated by a slow triangle LFO. From there it goes into a VCA and out to the mixer board, where the signal is sent through the Belle Epoch (Echoplex clone pedal).

Here's the recording:

Here's my first Morphagene patch. I feel like this module is going to take my a very long time to master.

I bought a few new modules for my 30th Bday. Morphagene, MATHS, Optomix, and a Mother32. I used Morphagene to mangle a Mother32 sequence. I used MATHS for modulation and Optomix for mixing and some dynamics then put on some reverb and delays through the AUX channel of the Lifeforms System Interface. Everything is sequenced by a Korg Electribe 2.

I record all my stuffs in live, sometimes I try several times but most of the time the first or even second take is the better... and I like this performance oriented way to record, even if it's rarely perfect or if I forgot to tweak what I've planed to tweak for the record... wink This way to record is quick and immediate and it's fun!

I just got my MG on Tuesday and have already fallen in love with it.

Thanks a lot! the distortion comes from Shapes from Audio Damage... yes MG is awesome, the first days I was wondering how to tame it in a musical way, but then I've quickly fallen in love with it!

Fucking phenomenal! I feel you could make entire albums with just grain-mangled-pianos and delays.

Hey, thanks a lot Rishin! Sure, MG + one instrumental phrase (why not some piano) + effects to build some sound's evolutions, and you almost have a track! cheers

Here is an improvisation my wife and I recorded together featuring the Morphagene. Kalimba (via Ears) and Intellijel Atlantis are fed into the Morphagene in time lag accumulation mode with a touch of Clouds and reverb from the Strymon Blue Sky. Modulation comes from Peaks (in dual LFO mode), Wogglebug, and Maths.

Thanks a lot man!
The MG was multed to the Rainmaker, with a sort of drony multi-tap delay, and I faded in the Rainmaker progressively, you can hear it entering slowly in the song starting from 1'20 or something, it sounds like a sort of high pitched drone of piano texture... it added a sort of tension in the song, really liked it! Rainmaker is a fantastic tool to create drony textures and all sorts of unusual delays, a perfect companion to Clouds, though it takes a lot of hp in my little 208hp case, sometimes I wonder if I should replace it by several other modules and other capabilities, but it sounds so great that it's still in the case!
Cheers

Yes, I decided to get a bit more “artsy” with some of my videos. Besides, I’m not sure how interesting “synths and disembodied hands” really is (I’ll still make that style though!).

I'm still trying to figure out a natural approach with the MG; it seems like it's either at the center of a patch, or not in the patch at all.. hmmm.....

One thing I've done a bit is to run a stereo mix of the patch into the MG, then just kinda grab loops here and there throughout the session while leaving the MG mix totally dry. Then, next time I make a new patch, I'll start with whatever I captured previously and build something around that.

Here's something that kind of happened like that:

Oh, lordy! Replace that sample and you could have the beginnings of a really cool track.

By way of an alternative, and a shameless attempt at self-promotion, the tune currently in my sig (The Man On The Bridge) uses Morphagene for its bassline - the low Buchla-y jumping around sound. Trying to use it as an effect as well as a sound-thing.

[bandcamp width=100% height=120 track=1620892917 size=large bgcol=ffffff linkcol=0687f5 tracklist=false artwork=small]

Morphagene is the entire engine in this track. Its cv out is triggering Just Friends, the LPGs and VCAs to run the show - a slow LFO is modulating Varispeed.
The sample is a Walkman that is turned off and Plaits is helping out with some modulation in Model.
Rings is the sound source that is processed through a Microverb II which make it sound like a massive post rock guitar. And some real guitar is added in the end that is going through Morphagene.

I love Morphagene.

Minimal groove I made last night using the Morphagene (through Optomix) for chords:

[s]https://soundcloud.com/nick-mykins/moonlight[/s]

I discovered it's really easy to get a chord progression going by sampling multiple layers of an oscillator tuned to different pitches on one splice (adjusting relative amplitudes with SOS) and then when you're ready for a new chord, record to a new splice. "Play" the progression with the Shift input.

The Morphagene can be a tough beast to control -- but god it's fun when it all clicks. I've played with various granular samplers in software, but nothing compares to the Morphagene's hands-on ability to jump between different time scales.

In these two pieces, I take a snippet from Dionne Warwick's "I Say a Little Prayer" and play it out at two different time scales. (I know, I know -- not the most likely Muff Wiggler sample!)

This first piece plays close to the granular level as a slow cycling function from Maths shifts slide. The Telharmonic provides a bit of weight below with a low organ tone. And there's some reverb from a Pico DSP. That's it.
[s]https://soundcloud.com/user-381305575/say-a-little[/s]

The second piece moves a larger window across a slightly longer time scale -- just before, during, and after the moment Dionne's backup singers intone "I say a little prayer for you" -- and extends this out, cycle-by-cycle over 9+ minutes via a very slow Maths cycling function. To my ears, it ends up sounding a little like early Steve Reich ("It's gonna rain"), but it also has this weird motorik quality, like some weird lost Bacharach-inspired Neu! song.
[s]https://soundcloud.com/user-381305575/a-little-prayer-for-you[/s]

But I've rambled long enough! Thanks for bearing with me!

That's it.

The second piece moves a larger window across a slightly longer time scale -- just before, during, and after the moment Dionne's backup singers intone "I say a little prayer for you" -- and extends this out, cycle-by-cycle over 9+ minutes via a very slow Maths cycling function. To my ears, it ends up sounding a little like early Steve Reich ("It's gonna rain"), but it also has this weird motorik quality, like some weird lost Bacharach-inspired Neu! song.

That works really well (yes, I listened to the whole thing). Must spend more time with mine rather than just using it as a glorified delay.

Thanks cptnal! Mr. Green

In the past, I would just feed it tons of modulation, typically from MI Marbles or Just Friends, and sit back to watch. (Or listen!) The results were always interesting, but I didn't necessarily understand what was going on. Since the New Year, I've been trying to use the Morphagene more deliberately. I've been stripping back modulation and using it more as a modern tape machine. There's no doubt it can do a ton of amazing things. But this more minimalist approach has been super inspiring.

I've been trying it with the mending song from Bagpuss. I can confirm it works for a broad range of material. It's peanut butter jelly time!

Inspiring indeed. I've been kind of neglecting the Morph the last month or so since I've only had small snippets of free time and it does sometimes take a while to get it making happy. Your tracks make me want to focus on it again and maybe with a bit lighter touch.
Thanks

As a postscript to the faux-Reichian time slipping idea, my rendition of the Mending Song from Bagpuss has finally passed the scrutiny of the Freesound moderators. It seems it sails close to the wind in terms of copyright, but since its license is non-commercial they've let it slide. In deference to their decision I won't splash the link all over interwebs, but it shouldn't be hard for the interested wiggler to find... thumbs up

Thanks, jnduffie. When you embark on a Reich/Bagpuss crossover you expect your audience to be limited, so it's nice to know it reached someone. Guinness ftw!

Agreed! It's great!

All this from a Sine Wave from the A-110-4 -> Optomix -> Dark Matter -> Clouds -> ErbeVerb -> Mrophagene -> A&H Mixer -> Analog Heat with some feedback.

Thanks - Maths and Chance modulate Morphagene, I'm manually freezing the DLD and changing the delay times.

Thank you!

Yes sure, it wasn't a very complex patch. The morphagene is triggered by random gates from a Pico RND and a S&H from a second RND modulates the Slide. I played with the rates of both Pico RND and with Gene size manually.

The Morphagene is sent to the pedal line (Ottobit jr, Polymoon, Mercury7) then back to mixer. The filter is from the Ottobit jr.

The remaining is the DPO sequenced by René sent to Optomix, Echophon and Erbe-verb, the kick and hats are from Erica synths modules.

Thanks ggillon! I love my Pico RND... I should get another one... That filter on your track got me thinking about the feedback resonance trick with the Make Noise LxD... And so, I was guessing that you had an LPG in your mix somewhere.... anyway, It got me thinking that I could do the resonance trick with the optomix, which I haven't tried yet...

Someday I'll have a morphagene composition to share here. I've been working on some other modules lately...

P.S. I have a LxD feedback resonance video and a Pico RND instruction video on my YT page if anyone not already knowing about them wants to inform themselves.. Apologies for being off topic..

Now that you mention resonance I think I get what you meant when asking which filter I used.

I thought you meant the simple LPF applied to the Morphagene bits but after listening to your video on LxD now I realize you probably asked about the looping sequence from the DPO.

In that case the sound is the first oscillator in LFO mode applied to the mod bus to modulate shape and angle of the second OSC final output. DPO is then sent to optomix for the enveloppe.

Ha Ha ! That's cool.... In fact that is pretty much what I realized after you showed the patch you had going... I realized that the cool stuff I was hearing was probably the DPO's parameters being modulated...

thumbs up thumbs up

Damn it.... Now I need a DPO..... eek!

This is a recording of a practice session recorded by my partner and I in preparation for our first gig a few weeks ago. Thought it turned out really nicely and our first gig was a great success.

Morphagene features quite heavily and is set to record/playback various sections of vocals, field recordings and percussion throughout. Enjoy smile

While Morphagene is pretty awesome when it comes to scapes/drones/textures...etc it's also pretty great for rhytmic duties.
I've been experimenting a lot lately with percussion reels and see how far i can take it. The following audio snippet is an example of that, it's not really a 'composition', but more a self-generating test.
The reel i've used here has just under 300 slices and is filled with percussion/bass samples. The sequence is random and changes every 8 bars. This is all Morphagene besides the kick (which comes from Mutable Stages)
I've been working on another reel with a similar amount of slices, but 2 totally different audio channels left and right, this gives me around 600 samples on 2 individual channels, which is pretty sweet. Love this machine cool

Just got my morphagene in the post today. I owned one when it first came out them funds ran tight so it had to go. But we are back in action! Here is a loop recorded with BIA,plaits, and rings which were sequenced via the OPZ into the morphagene. It’s such a wonderful module.
