upcoming Morton Subotnick documentary

Post by s o l v e n t » Tue May 23, 2017 4:35 pm

Hi,

We've been working on a new, official Morton Subotnick documentary for the past year, "Subotnick - Portrait of an Electronic Music Pioneer"... Same team behind "I Dream Of Wires" and the forthcoming Bob Moog documentary, "Electronic Voyager". We've self-funded up to this point, investing most of the $ that's come in for IDOW over the past year, but now we've launched an Indiegogo campaign to finish filming.

Rewards include our own 50th-anniversary-edition reissues of "Silver Apples of the Moon," on vinyl, including new liner notes and 3 different lim-to-100 colour editions, and on cassette tape (first new tape issue since 1967!). Copies secured through Indiegogo will be SIGNED by Morton. Also offering T-shirts, CDs, postcards, with many of the items coming signed by Morton.

Here's our new, in-progress trailer:

And here's a link to the Indiegogo campaign:

Looks awesome, nice work guys. Just made a pledge.

You are really doing something important with your documentary projects.

Looking forward to Electronic Voyager too!

some of the footage is from trip metal fest in detroit last year.
i performed the same night as him, amazing!
during sound check for his set,i was standing in the middle of the room, listening. and he came down from the stage and asked me if it sounded ok?
yes!
at the beginning of his set a giant industrial air conditioner started.
he waited 5 minutes for it to cycle before he performed.
just silence.
and his every so often request for it to stop.
great night!
so great you guys are making a documentary about such a gem of a man!

and that my "spinning discos" machines are in the shots of him performing in detroit.

Yup - the Trip Metal show was the 1st thing we filmed for this doc! Detroit's a reasonably short drive from Toronto. Great show, and an excellent venue, which I've been back to since.

RE: air condition - yeah, that sounds like Mort... he takes his silence very seriously!

Cheers for the kind words...

NEW VIDEO!

Here's a new preview of our forthcoming "Subotnick" documentary, a look into Morton Subotnick's working process, creating a new composition, "Crowds and Powers," which will be premiered at the Lincoln Center, July 20-22 (http://www.lincolncenter.org/show/subotnick). "Crowds and Powers" is being described as "a multi-media tone poem for voice, electronic sound, and live imagery," and will be performed in collaboration with video artist Lillevan, and vocalist/composer Joan La Barbara, a vocal virtuoso in the field of contemporary music. Joan is seen working with Morton in this video.

The money we're raising on Indiegogo will go towards funding our next trip to NYC, where we'll be there to capture the Lincoln Center performances, and film behind-the-scenes. Please help bring Morton Subotnick's story to the screen, by pledging your support via Indiegogo:

This project is only at 40% of their 40k target. If anyone else felt like supporting the film we might just see it get made :)

That one did end up getting funded though!:

It's being edited now and is going great! We have a trailer done for it that I wish I could share, but it has uncleared music. Working to get a music-cleared version done soon so I can share...

Thanks, that somehow escaped me! Sorry for the false alarm. And best of luck for today.

Really looking forward to this! :nana:

It looks like the deadline for funding got pushed back a month, so there's still time to contribute.

I went with the T-shirt myself, bit damn that vinyl was tempting!

Got an email about this project which details a stretch goal of

"visiting some of Mort’s international friends and colleagues (including infamous synth designer Serge Tcherepnin"...

I don't think that word means what you think it means.

FINAL 3 DAYS to support our "Subotnick" documentary fundraiser on Indiegogo.... ENDS this Thursday July 20:
http://igg.me/at/subotnickfilm

We've not only reached our initial funding goal, thanks to the generous support of our funders, we’ve even hit 50% of our First Stretch Goal!

By stretching $10,000 past our original goal, we can plan some additional shoots outside of the USA, where all filming for "Subotnick" has been scheduled to date. While not *essential* to telling Mort’s story, international travel would give our film a bigger feel and broader perspective. Potential considerations include upcoming EU/Japanese tour dates, visiting some of Mort’s international friends and colleagues (including legendary synth designer Serge Tcherepnin, who not only worked alongside Mort at CalArts, but also once lived in Mort’s closet in NYC!), and revisiting notable locations from Mort’s past (including his years living in Berlin).

To make our First Stretch more enticing for you, we’re also going to make those 50th-anniversary-edition “Silver Apples of the Moon” reissue LPs even more special, upgrading the jackets to a luxurious gatefold - with more room for photos, liner notes, and more!
