Looking for Tiny Case/Skiff Ideas

Post by gimber » Thu Jun 15, 2017 9:34 pm

I'm looking for something to repurpose as a small shallow skiff, 18-24 HP or so, for some passive utility modules (and an occasional toy for my kid). I've seen some bamboo flatware trays come up now and then as cheap and easy enclosures, which look ok but seem to always be a little wider than what I'm after.
Has anyone seen anything else that's fairly ready to go off the shelf? I'm pretty handy but would rather not build the whole thing from scratch.
DIY electronics enclosures are an option but are all slightly wrong-sized from what I've found.

Of course, there's this thing but it's probably a bit more than you're looking for... but at least it has power if you want to put anything more in it.

Thanks - that one's been tempting, the handle is cool, but it's deep.

I ended up going the bamboo flatware tray route and screwed some 1x2 pieces to the inside, then drilled holes for the module mounting screws into that. It turned out pretty well for a quick hack.

Pictures here. Found the bamboo box at a thrift shop and a local lumber store gave me some scrap 1x2 for free, so this cost about $3 including the screws. It ended up being 42 hp. Right now it's just ugly homemade mults and a synthrotek either-or. Will probably add some passive attenuators wih ridiculous knobs to replace the blanks.

That looks nice. I have thought recently that it might be nice to have a separate tiny rack to contain just a sequencer and midi interface module.

Thanks. I think a sequencer would be great in a box like this. A row power or uzeus would do the trick. It'd be like a control skiff but pocket sized.

Just did a search for wood boxes on Ikea.

This is 20cm wide and 4U is 17.78cm. If the wood itself is 1cm thick it would work.

It's 40cm wide but it looks like you are losing 3cm per side due to wood thickness and corner bracing.

320mm/5.08mm = 62hp

Anyone want to give it a try?

This box on amazon seems to be the same one I found:

They have a 15" wide one too which should end up in the 70-ish hp range.
