br>Who is Gene Stopp from Moog ?
I can't find much info on him .
He doesn't seem to talk much but seems to be a brilliant engineer .
Is it any way to contact him , I would love to talk to him and ask him why he feels the Model 15 has a special something , more magic to it . I've heard it said a few times that the model 15 has something else going on in it's sound some extra magic and I would love to know more about it .
Please place any links to interviews , contact and more info on this .
Thanks br> br> |

br>Is this the same Gene Stopp who was behind the asm-1?
Seems too much of a co-incidence otherwise. br> br> |

br>Wasn't there an ASM-1 board running some drone voices in one of the Keith Emerson reissues? br> br> |

br>He was Keith Emerson's personal tech and maintained/rebuilt his massive modular over the years.
He put the ASM and other stuff behind panels in Keith's modular and I think had a big part of at least maintaining the highly unusual and complex preset system that you can see demonstrated in the Rachel Flowers videos.
And yes, he was brought into Moog to consult on the EMMS re-issue series which was the genesis of their making the Model 15, 35, 55 available again.
He's a bit of an odd duck, as we all are. I'm not sure he is up to casual conversation but keep trying to contact him. : ) br> br> |

br>Funny that he thought a Model 15 would only be worth a couple grand tops to him twenty-some years ago... and maybe a thousand for a Mini (paid $150 [not a typo] for mine when the DX7 came out... so, I can relate on that one).
There were some great deals on Moog modulars for a time and on occasion... until a few sharks emerged that caused price inflation by about an order of magnitude. br> br> |

Will Alexander was Emo's Long time moog tech. Gene came in later and was involved in a late major rebuild. Said rebuild likely was the genesis of the moog re-issues.
But WA was Keith's primary moog tech. Chapter on it in Mark Vail's big red Synthesizers book. br> br> |

Gene rebuilt that system _twice_, once in the early 90s, and once again 20 years later. (20 year overhaul interval isn't that crazy for something that complicated.)
also both Gene and Will were _both_ KE's personal techs at various times, separate and together.

br>One heck of a nice guy. At knobcon he took me behind the system 55 on display. Spent about an hour showing me circuit details and had all kinds of interesting stories. br> br> |

br>EMwhite: Thanks for posting that... it's one of the videos with Gene I was referring to in another recent thread.
Another I've seen is a Sonic State video. br> br> |

Believe it or not - I hadn't seen this one before. Thanks for posting. I really miss Bob & Keith. br> br> |

br>A lot of those hard to find NOS parts for the Emerson recreation were from Kevin Lightner/Synthfool.
Nice to see them presented in a nice way. br> br> |

br>My introduction to Gene Stopp was finding a minimoog listing of his on Ebay that he and Bob had turned into a custom 5-octave keyboard with other cool enhancements.
There was a video on youtube from the auction. I don't think it ever sold, mostly due to a vague title in the listing. If I can find the video (or if it's still posted) I'll add it here. It's really cool.
Edit: Good ol' Matrixsynth! A post from 2017 retained at least the photos. https://www.matrixsynth.com/2017/03/custom-modded-5-octave-mini-moog-m odel.html br> br> |

br>Hot dog, found it!
This is a one of a kind Mini Moog Model D with a 5 octave digitally scanning keyboard in a custom Birch case.
It has an additional panel of custom effects and an added external modulation panel to connect the Roland
MPU 101 CV to Midi interface and a never used Steiner Masters Touch wind unit. It was built by one of Moog's
top designers has been recently thoroughly serviced and calibrated. It will connect to a Moog Modular etc.
Please see demonstration video on you tube https://youtu.be/D9tlvM9vrs4
