Oscilloscope app for iOS?

Author Oscilloscope app for iOS?

I searched the forum for this topic, but the only thread I found is from 2015 – without any real conclusion, so I'd like to raise the topic again: Can anybody suggest an Oscilloscope App for iOS?

I connect my modular and the iPad via Expert Sleepers ES-8 and Apple Camera Connection Kit (Lighting -> USB), so it would be important that the app would support external audio inputs. Ideally the Oscilloscope would also be able to show CVs, though I don't know if that's possible at all because of the DC-coupled I/Os?

I went through this dilemma a few years ago, my issue being I had no way to get CV in and out of the iPad.
Audulus can do it, you can set up multiple scopes as part of a patch.
But there was at one time a professional scope on the App Store, kinda pricey but looked great.
Sorry I don’t recall the name hmmm.....

I haven't used it for CV as I don't have a DC coupled interface, but I use this app to visualise audio from my modular:

https://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=388 636804&v0=itunes.com%2Fapps%2Foscilloscope

According to one of the reviews, it will also work for CV, so might be worth checking out. It works great for my applications though, with both audio interfaces that I use.

For CV use you are better off just getting a modern new digital o'scope or an old used analog o'scope. Even for audio signals the iOS o'scopes have shortcomings since you are at the mercy of the frequency response of the interface you are using or the built in microphone etc.

That said . . .

I have the FaberAcoustical SignalScope Pro which is very nice and full featured but on the expensive side at $79 if I remember correctly:

I have another one by Onyx Apps that is just called Oscilloscope and is pretty nice for only $10:

^yup, that’s what I was trying to remember hihi

I've got SignalScopePro on my iPad. It's OK, has an oscilloscope, Octave analyzer, allows me to see differences in waveforms, has a signal generator for oscillator tuning. It cannot display full voltage signals, can only take about 1 volt so you have to run your signal through an attenuator first. And you will need something like the Behringer UCA202 interface to get your signals into it. It will do me until I can get more money and figure out what "real" oscilloscope to buy.

I also use this one. It has two channels (not the case with several apps) including Lissajous mode. Never used it for CV, only for audio.

Downloaded today another app called Vectorscope. Haven't tested it yet (no interface available right now).

Thanks for your comments and suggestions. I just bought the Onyx app https://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=388 636804&v0=itunes.com%2Fapps%2Foscilloscope and I can confirm that it works really well with the ES-8 – for audio and CV. So for instance one channel can show a modulation CV, the other the modulated audio signal. I just tried it for 20 minutes and the only downside I noticed so far is, that the max. buffer size is 2000 ms, which is not enough for very slow modulations – but for a 10$ app it's not bad at all.

A hardware scope is probably way more elaborated, but the space in my rack is very limited, so for me using the iPad as an external scope is a nice solution.

I got the onyx app yesterday but the signal is too weak to show anything more than a slight ripple in the wave when going to iPhone audio in. Audio picked up over the mic works great.

What type of connection/cables do I need to make this work?

I’m tried several things. 0-coast to dude mixer. Out of the dude I have a splitter (stereo to left right) then one Channel to iPhone X 3.5mm to lightening adaptor ( came with the phone).

Also tried dynamic out from 0-coast straight to the iPhone adaptor.

Thanks.

According to the Onyx website, you need something like the Behringer UCA202 to feed the signal into the iDevice:

I meant to include that link. Thought I did.

Several items are really too expensive and at least one is a dead link. The Behringer would require other adaptors to convert 3.5 to av left right so that only feels like a partial solution.

The $25 patch he links too may work but I’d like to find the same thing on Amazon if possible.

Ideally I’d like something that doesn’t require a connection to a pc

I’m looking for the Easiest and cheapest option.

Would also like to know of an inexpensive (around $100) digital scope. Did anyone mention those mini handheld scopes? Any recommendations?
