Ableton Live / Beatstep Pro issues

I'm having an issue with Live 9 and a Beatstep Pro (latest firmware 2.0.0.2) that's driving me nuts. Maybe one of you can help me figure this out.

So, I've stripped my setup down to just Live and the BSP, no other gear, nothing, and no matter what I do, if I have the transport controls MIDI mapped to play, stop, and record in Live, if the BSP is set to USB sync, it immediately goes into a stop/start loop furiously as soon as I hit play from either source (Live or the BSP, doesn't matter).

Inspecting the MIDI data shows that the MMC start signal is sent, Live begins sending clock, the BSP then, for whatever reason, immediately sends a "stop" and then they begin ping-ponging start and stop commands. A short clip of the beginning of the MIDI data is below.

What in the blazes is causing the BSP to counter the "start" command (even it's own start command, if I hit play on it!) with a "stop" immediately as soon as the first clock signal comes back to it? (This is reliably repeatable, anytime it gets a clock signal sent it's way, it first responds with a "stop" then ping-pongs the stop/start cascade....)

I've tried reloading the firmware, resetting it to factory defaults, turning off ALL sync inputs in Live preferences, this still happens...

Here's the MIDI transcript:

Just to clarify: during your test do you have the BSP midi out and in both going to the computer? Sounds to me like it could be a midi loop. I have had my BSP severely freek out when it was receiving its own midi looped back to the input. Whenever I would go into record mode it would go crazy then stop. I sorted it out with some channel filtering in my midi patch bay.

Well, it's just the USB connection. I followed the instructions here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d1kMa2piwyk

Basically, anytime the Arturia is in sync mode 'usb', seemingly regardless of the MIDI settings in Live, pressing play from either source starts this sort of feedback lop. This is with nothing but the USB port connected, Live is not in EXT mode, input sync is OFF in Live's preferences, the BSP is in "usb" sync, and I hit play anywhere.

The only thing that "fixes" it is if I turn input "remote" to OFF for the BSP. But then, I cannot control the transport with the hardware keys, which really isn't a solution for me, as I want to have the option to control the playback and recording from the BSP.

A possible work around would be to map 3 of the BSP pads in controller mode to the transport in live instead of trying to use the actual transport controls on the BSP. My gut feeling is that you can't run the BSP and ableton both as the master transport control at the same time. It might be possible to filter and route it to work using something like bomes midi translator software. Best luck to you figuring it out.

I'll try that, thanks. Yeah, it seems like getting the BSP to follow clock from Live, so long as the transports are mapped to the hardware transports, is the problem.

Does nobody slave the BSP to the DAW? Or does nobody else have this issue?
MuffBob
I've got exactly the same issue and found this thread with no solution.... can anyone help?

Maybe that is the problem. You shouldn't need to map those.
