R54 and 53 integration

hi !

i really like the sound of the R53 but i found that the R54 out is not strong enough to play well with the R53
i mean that i really would like to be able to have the clean sound of my R54 at a higher volume and after that make the waveshaper of the R53 clip more

is it just me ? am i doing something wrong ?

i though to boost the R54 signal but don't now how
i though about R51 but don't now if i have enough power in my case... i use a doepfer diy kit 2 with two R54 one R53 one R52 one envelop a sport mod a doepfer vca an att and a R60

have you some solutions ?
is a simple preamp like a dod 250 pedal can work ?

tks

bye

I use two Circuit Abbey Gozintas to adjust levels going into and out of modules. Very helpful with my Metasonix R-56.

hi ! snakejaw

and you have enough clean volume boost ?

For my purposes, yes. The Gozinta only starts to (nicely) distort when it's cranked. But I've never tested it on an R54.

I think the 53 needs a pretty sharp waveform as an input to waveshape, and the 54 might be too round in its output. An R55 (with the sharktooth wave) and and RK3, however, holy tomatoes it's a nice combination.

ok thanks but in this demo he uses a sin wave and i think it works great
but he write that it's a strong sin (10vpp)

Wow that does indeed sound beautiful. Looks like, as you mention, it's not taking the output of the R54 there, though - so maybe a Mungo works better into the R53 input.

Maybe match the examples there on inputting CV into the carrier input, as well? I'm not sure how much a true sine wave the R54 is, but you might enjoy just switching the R53 into the R54 as its filter, instead of the other way around.

Happy traveling, E

Try using a 12AW6 instead of an AF6 in the right socket if you have one lying around. The higher gain seems to help the pulser latch more easily onto cleaner sines I send from my R54.
(Probably because it saturates sooner so the pulser sees a sharper transient.)

i made that recording, the r54 does nothing, forgot to plug that cable out:)
good gain staging i think is very rewarding with metasonix modules, i use gozinta too. strong sine waves work well with r53 and r54, doepfer a-110-4 for example is one of my favorites.

And anything made of tubes will be like that--unless the builder is an OCD fanatic willing to match tubes to within 1% and fiddle with resistor values or oceans of trimpots. (It sucks! It hates you!)
