US source for PJ398SM jacks

Post by 555x555 » Mon Feb 12, 2018 4:57 pm

Anybody know of a US source for PJ398SM jacks? A source that ships cheaply/quickly to the US is fine, too.

PJ398SM jacks are the newer and slightly more robust version of PJ301M, AKA Thonkiconn, jacks. The difference between them seems like not a huge deal, but if I'm gonna stock up, figure it might as well be with the newer version.

I just got some from Erthenvar last week and they are the improved version. I received them very quickly too.

Yes, they're the ones Erthenvar has. They have a square flange under the collar instead of round.

I was wondering myself a couple weeks ago.

Now that Erthenvar is no more, where are y'all getting them PJ398SMs? At the moment it looks like Thonk or nothing.

Small Bear Electronics was mentioned as a source in another thread:

Thanks but these appear to have two connectors and two legs, different footprint, etc. Need the "Thonkiconn" footprint.

For a second I got excited, as I have a Small Bear purchase to make imminently. Alas!

It is possible to buy straight from qingpu, even in quite small quantity if I understood it right.

Can confirm that electro-smith and AI Synthesis are the only ones that have these jacks in stock in the USA as of today. Thonk is still not shipping to the USA. Modularaddict has them in the catalog but they're out of stock.

There are two overseas suppliers, one is Emitum (they are shipping to the USA right now) and the other is Tayda with their clone.

Worth noting that Tayda is half the price of Electro-smith, and a quarter the price of AI Synthesis.

Worth noting that cheaper isn't always better. If the metal is thinner or of different type or quality material, then it can fatigue or have less spring force with use. If that's your normal contact, or your tip contact, then you might have intermittent or non-contact with use. Do your really want to risk itwhen the actual savings are so realtively little?

Jacks of a modular are *not* the place to try and save money.

Be careful comparing price across parts that may be more orange and apple, than fuji vs. red delicious.

a long time ago, I remember when Nick from erthenvar or maybe it was Dave Jones (jones video not eevblog) was talking to qing pu about getting beryllium copper as standard going forward. it was a big deal for reliability. you won't find that on a cheap clone jacks. think about 1000 cycles or 10,000 cycles. cheap jacks can't hang.

Good points about reliability vs price.

FWIW when Thonk is shipping to the US, you don't have to choose, as their pricing for 50+ is excellent.

In the meantime, Emitum is shipping what look to be for-real QingPu PJ398SM jacks - with cheap flat pricing to the US.

That's good to know. The large minimum order size usually puts me off, but seems like it would be worth it if it's really that much cheaper. I emailed them to see.

That's what they say but if you contact them they do smaller orders.

I just ordered 1000 and have ordered 500 from them before.
New track, mostly modular...
