Using ES-8 with ES-6, ES7 and ES-3 over USB?

Author Using ES-8 with ES-6, ES7 and ES-3 over USB?
Mr. Pete
I have my ES-6 and ES-7 connected with ES-3 over ADAT at the moment

If I add the new ES-8 to these modules will they work together in an aggregate independently without having to connect over ADAT to the audio interface they're currently attached to?

How many I/O channels would this ES group provide me with?

Thanks, Pete
os
Not entirely clear what you're asking.

If you have the ES-8 in an aggregate with another audio interface, and connect the ES-3/6/7 to the ES-8, that will give you 12 ins and 16 outs.
Mr. Pete
SWEET hyper

To clarify - I've been running my ES modules off the ADAT from RME FireFace 800/802 just want to confirm if I were to go ahead and buy the ES-8 then that whole set of ES modules 3/6/7 and 8 could run completely independently without FF800/802s?

Yes.
Mr. Pete
…still eagerly awaiting delivery on my new ES-8 through Long and McQuade (Canada) - they sure seem to be taking their sweet time with your distributor hihi

meanwhile reading dox and wondering ~ If I want to connect it with my ES 3 ES 6 and ES 7 is that doable from the rear "HEADER" or will I also need to engage the ADAT on the front of the ES8?

cheers and all best, Pete

You need to use the ADAT.
Mr. Pete
OK Thanks 0S, so…safe to assume I leave the other 3 configured as is in case and then add my new ES-8 via ADAT and plug it into a USB port when it gets here?

I haven't found any ADAT cables shorter than 3 feet yet but will keep looking

cheers, Pete

Yes.

I do 15cm TOSlink cables: http://expert-sleepers.co.uk/accessories.html

GREAT! - I am in the process of trying to get a(another) local distributor to get some for me now that my *brand new*(via Long and McQuade, Toronto ) ES-8 finally arrived on Friday - BUT more urgently as you can read below
I really NEED some help getting setup with the software ASAP please?
…anyone???

Hooking up the ES-8 was a breeze and all [44!] INPUTS are working great but CV output isn't working for me on High Sierra 10.13 and Logic 10.4 with SILENT WAY 2.7.1

I went thru OS/Expert Sleepers' Logic VIMEO tutorial a few times, and everything else I could find so far but not having much success yet. I have no clue why the SW Voice Controller still won't calibrate for me after dozens of attempts again today and of course each day since it got here. I chose the AUDIO signal TRACK name and also tried the INPUT names in the sidechain of the SW Software Instrument and everything seems to be cabled and monitoring correctly ~ that is I can hear input thru all 12 ES-8 channels ~ but either way I side chain, I mostly just get a series of clicks from one monitor to the other… it looked like I had a few brief waveforms in the window on one go for a hot minute but mostly it has been and remains static with no indication on calibration status every time I give it another shot
Since I had to get a new pair of ADAT/Lightpipe cables to attach these on my ES 6/7 & 3 chain I wonder if that might be the problem after all this hassle <shrug> that that new ADAT cable on the ES-3/ ES-8 OUTPUT end is on the fritz?

Oh and Im using more less the exact same patch with the same ANALOGUE SYSTEMS modules as your VIMEO video demo [ES8-1 out to RS-95E VCO CV IN ; ES8-2 OUT to GATE IN on RS-60 EG to RS-80 VCA and back in to ES8-IN (again I tried several 1-12 ] though the patch part goes by so quick its hard to tell exactly how you set each module in the patch. In any case, the same patch I used CV/GATE sounds great driven by an OBERKORN instead of the ES-8 outs on the same audio input - and yes, I also tried another synth (Telemetry) for the hell of it but still no joy with SW VC

I really want to get it working and send in the LICENSE fee already. How can I help you help me? Should I post or send Screen shots : or is there another solution occurring to you?

ES-8:

Product ID: 0x308d
Vendor ID: 0x20b1
Version: 1.20
Serial Number: EXSL-ES-8-1-1009
Speed: Up to 480 Mb/sec

I believe these stats as per above are all the latest so its not firmware, correct? - and FYI the ES-8 is running in an aggregate with a new RME FireFace 802 also running under USB with FF800 and Focusrite Octopre MKii on it's ADAT ~ I often add an iPAD in that aggregate chain but it doesn't seem to make any difference which order I load the ES-8 or iPAD into the aggregate(s) after the FF802

Thanks Kindly in advance! PETE
Mr. Pete
Further to above ~ after more testing I can confirm all the AUDIO OUT from ES-8 is working fine as well as AUDIO IN so this problem is strictly related to CV - OUT

I will try a few other synths in the meantime while I wait for a response …still reading and confused about DC coupling ~ and whether this has something to do with it?

OK let's start simple.

Do the ES-8 inputs and outputs work as expected for audio?

If so, can you load up, say, Silent Way LFO and send an LFO to your VCO pitch?
Mr. Pete
YES - I believe AUDIO works in both directions - if I select and designate ES-89 output I can hear it or record it on another track

As far as SW LFO - if I add it in the channel strip of the AUDIO out from the Modular generating a single continuous tone - there is no audible difference but the TOP window Osciloscope shows a wave form while the lower one remains static

If I add SW LFO as a STEREO software instrument on a new track/channel strip the modular is on and then start fiddling with the parameters I am getting glitchy (audio) blasts and (visual) responses that look like this screenshot attached on the 'Scopes

OK, not entirely sure what you mean, but it sounds like the ES-8 is working.

So onto calibration with the Voice Controller. Just use that one plug-in in the DAW, and just a VCO in the modular. No envelopes/VCA/filter etc. How far do you get with that?
Mr. Pete
Thanks - if you need clarification on anything above let me know

OK ~ So, VCO out into ES8-1 by RECOMMENDED method
with SW VC on adjacent MULTI-OUTPUT (3 xSTEREO) software instrument track with sidechain/pointing to either - ES8 AUDIO "TRACK NAME" or INPUT 31 (as THEY appear in Logic using aggregate with RME Fireface 802)

RESULTS:
audio is an uninterrupted drone tone from the VCO
visual is nothing until I wiggle a few parameter 'knobs' under the envelope section - no change on the left side wave image I called the oscilloscope

The side chain input wants to be the actual hardware input. Is 'input 31' the first input on the ES-8?

If the VCO pitch doesn't change at all when you click 'calibrate', then the routing from the plug-in output to the VCO is wrong.
Mr. Pete
YES - THEY ARE THE SAME INPUTS

LOGIC 10.4 popup menu displays the currently occupied track names and then below a line - all available inputs

OK! applause Plug-in output to the VCO is ES-8 1 OUT (the right column 1-8)
and FYI earlier when I tried sending GATE it was from ES-8 2 OUT directly below - is this wrong? Where should they be?

Co-incidentally (or possibly related?) before ES-8 arrived ~ with ES 3 and ES 6 and ES 7 connected by ADAT to my old interface on a previous aggregate ~ the INPUT numbers on ES 7 were reversed - that is 1 & 2 were reversed at the top of the chain so instead of being 27 and 28 - #1 was 28 and #2 was 27 - maybe will try using "8" while I wait for your next msg

Does the potential flakiness of my ADAT /Lightpipe connection have any bearing? The one sending out to ES3 is totally solid but the other one from ES-6 to ES8 ADAT IN that I just bought (sight unseen online) has very awkward jacks …I did order your special 15 cm ES ADATs this a.m. via Moog Audio Toronto but I have a feeling it will be another considerable wait time if they have to get stock from you in the UK

Thanks so much for this OS! Much appreciated

Still no joy with the SW VC anywhere however, some good news - perhaps - using the same OUTPUT #1 as in above trials I successfully got the LFO working by adding the PLUG-IN to the AUDIO Track of ES-8 on INPUT 1 and tweaking parameters there
[just the regular LFO btw - the Step LFO didn't work ~I believe its the only one in the suite so far Ive tried that's worked]

OK back to the Voice Controller. If you have it loaded, outputting to the same tracks as you had the LFO working on, and press calibrate, the VCO should respond. Does it?
Mr. Pete
no nada nothing else on audio tracks other then what I wrote above

However, I discovered that if I set OUTPUT (not sidechain but in the main channel strip that usually defaults to MAIN 1-2) to the same 31-32 that ES 8 1& 2 output to I WILL get action in the SW VC Calibration window and audible VCO sounds - but so far it just craps out again after that and calibration doesn't seem to have been successful

Again this patch is ES8 1 OUT to VCO CV and VCO Wave out to ES8 1 AUDIO IN which is 31 following RME FIREFACE 802 in my aggregate over USB

I get the impression I need to be sending this as MONO not stereo but could not figure out how to output LOGIC SOFTWARE instrument as a MONO signal

HOW MANY ADAT CABLES do I need to configure this correctly given that es 3, 6 & 7 are already connected at back?

USING only 1 ADAT from ES-3 to ES8 givse me the same " 12 ins and 16 outs" results in AUDIO MIDI SETUP and better results in my Silent Way VC trials- particularly when I inadvertently must have had the TWO ADAT IN/OUT reversed and started hearing random Sequences while reporting back to you in other forum
Mr. Pete
This is so strange - that I FINALLY applause got the calibration to work for me at least ONCE -temporarily - by patching ES 8 OUT 1 to CV 1 and ES 8 OUT 2 to CV VARY on the Analogue Systems RS-95E back in to ES 8- IN 1. <shrug> isn't that weird? I was so thrilled to be playing notes on it finally ~ wow

Unfortunately, have not yet been able to duplicate that success or reload the saved calibration file and get the same audio results where I was successfully playing notes and scales etc on keyboard for software instrument running SW VC (multi) pointing to sidechain as described above the SOFTWARE INSTRUMENT OUPUT in channel strip was set to same audio OUTS as Modular's audio input channels (in Logics channel strip) rather than the default STEREO OUT 1-2 (not in manual but I just figured I should try it as last resort - Resulting calibration is below

Im still confused also about the MONO>STEREO issues - does it sound like I need something other than regular MONO patch cables?
I tried one of Analog Solutions cables MONO male splitter to two MONO males if you know those but not sure if thats helpful??

No.

by patching ES 8 OUT 1 to CV 1 and ES 8 OUT 2 to CV VARY on the Analogue Systems RS-95E

That would have fed the gate into the CV-IN VARY, raising the pitch by several octaves.

Where do you have the Range switch on the VCO set? You want it on STD or "-2 Oct", not Wide.
