Saw Suzanne Ciani's awesome performance in Brooklyn Saturday night.. Was very impressed and its always amazing hearing her that loud and in quadraphonic. It was in an old church in Brooklyn and it must have been 100 degrees in there. Everyone was covered in sweat and it was humid as all hell.. none the less it was packed to the brim with people in good sprits, even sitting on the floor right in front of her, and she handled it like a pro.. I wouldn't be surprised if her Buchla was freaking out.. sometimes it felt like she was trying to tame a beast and the beast was winning.. but it was a story clearly being told by a master story teller.

Got an email after the show with a link to this article:

https://www.wired.com/story/suzanne-ciani-live-quadraphonic/

Really interesting read. All about her new album that I had no idea was coming out. Pretty impressive, it was printed in quad and comes with a special piece of kit to hook your record player up to four speakers. Can't wait to check it out.

Any other Wigglers at the show? would love to hear your thoughts or see videos.

Only available in the US!

Any kind USA wiggler want to buy it for me and ship it to the UK (for full reimbursement and sweetener obviously!)

I love the fact that it's a 227e that's processing the quad, and then there's only 227 copies of the record being made. For $227. The nerdiness is remarkable. we're not worthy

Fingers crossed she releases an affordable stereo version for those of us who are morally (and financially) opposed to paying that kind of money for a record.

Listening to it now on Apple Music. Even in stereo, she creates a sense of space.

How's $6?

I'm intrigued by this format. Not any experience with it (or any other spatialization mixes). I guess today DTS 5.1 is the most popular?
Though : "popular" might be relative to the population involved in multichannel as opposed to the entire population of audio consumers.

There's some plugins for Doppler effect - but work in stereo.
It would be cool to do that in quad sound. I guess the 227e could do it?
(except doppler also has a pitch shift effect)
and/or come up with some other "swirl" type procedures as CV.

Just found Live Quadraphonic album in its entirety is on YT ("autogenerated by YT").

Absolutely loving this - thanks for the link.
I'm very surprised it has only had 20 views!

It's a shame the physical Album is only available in the US.

Looks like she's playing shows in London (Jazz Cafe), Berlin (Silent Green Kulturquartier), and LA soon! So if you can get to one of those shows I bet she'll be selling the record there in person smile Go say hi.

Listened in stereo, would love to hear in quad!

Has anyone listened to this in quad? Would love to know how pronounced the spatialisation effects are.

Just to remember folks, Suzanne actually gave a masterclass on the quadraphonic topic!

It is an amazing talk really, she's a real master of her trade

I'm guessing that the audio on the vinyl is the same as the download, so it would contain the quadraphonic information also, it just needs to be decoded. I got this from the Wired website:

"If you have a modern home theater receiver, there's likely a Dolby Pro Logic II decoder in it, and if you flip that on and choose the "Music Mode" setting, it does a decent job of recreating Ciani's quad mix."

I tried this by streaming from my iTunes on my phone through my home theater receiver set to Dolby Pro Logic II Music mode and I'm sure I was hearing the quad surround mix. There seemed to be really good separation among the speakers.

Also, there is an interview here: http://www.listentothis.info/2018/08/interview-suzanne-ciani/ in which they provide a copy of her 40 page paper to the National Endowment: http://www.listentothis.info/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/Report-to-Nati onal-Endowment-Buchla-Higher-Qualitysm.pdf

I compared it and it is the same as the 10 page paper that came with her 1975 concert release. They just made the text and illustrations smaller to fit in 10 pages.

I have also played the YouTube video through my surround sound stereo receiver and it definitely has 4 distinct channels and movement around the speakers.
I couldn't be sure if that was the 'decoded' quad info in the track (using the various surround sound settings) or if it was being 'created' by the algorithms in the unit itself - but it sure sounded excellent!

Having seen the concert on YouTube, and photos of Ms Ciani’s setup, I’m intrigued to know what modules and/or functionality she has in the modular system.

I’m not a Buchla user (yet!) but wondered if there’s a reference out there or if someone can identify what modules she’s using? I read it’s 200e based but can’t see/identity what they are from the video and still photos.

Thanks

Not 100% sure this is her setup. I keep recreating it then deleting it when I become obsessed with something else. As far as I can tell, it should be pretty close. Her arrangement of modules in the bottom row seems to change frequently (I think sometimes based on where she positions the 223 in her environment).

I'm sure I got something wrong but, it should be a starting point.

*edit* Her Eventide H9 modules look like they've gotten the Northern Light modular treatment and are mounted in a 3U cabinet.

*edit #2* She kinda talks a bit about her rig here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CFD72PXOmxA

Thank you for this very informative!

I don’t think I’ll be spending £22,000+ to recreate it though! seriously, i just don't get it

you just need 4 active monitors, or two stereo pairs of speakers. Long time I used two cheap HiFi stereo systems, but since a couple of years I own a mixer with 4 subchannels and 4 monitors. Also with a simple joystick panner for the DAW, using a Doepfer Drehbank as a 4-channel CV-MIDI input (and power source for the voltage). To just listen to quad recordings a 5.1 sound system may work.

So, in theory, quad listening and also producing in quad doesn't have to be expensive or difficult.
