TOTALLY not modular synth related, but anyone here want to get a dungeon synth thread going? I'm a big fan and it definitely deserves some mention. I'm a huge fan of Jim Kirkwood and it'd be nice to archive some other people's faves, let alone some possibility of modular in this realm (with a HUGE reminder it's very particular on the sound used i.e. romplers, dco polys, vst etc)

I'm not a fan of everything that sits under the dungeon synth umbrella but the aforementioned Jim Kirkwood's 'Tower of Darkness' is definitely a fave. I tried some of his other stuff but just keep going back to that one.

I'd be interested to hear any recommendations for similar stuff.

Thanks for the links - I only know Rashim's techno stuff on NE but I really enjoyed his take on dungeon synth above.

Here's an old guilty pleasure you probably know:

Damn that's the exact album that got me seriously into DS about 3-4 years ago. it's still hard to find people pursuing the "analog" sound, some of the recent efforts by Mausolei are close (sorry no youtube):

https://mausolei.bandcamp.com/album/letzte-worte

I think that while almost any "sound" can be used, modular has very little place here... the "pacing" is very important for the dungeon element, there's a certain effect where pauses are exaggerated, where time seems to slow down. you can hear this already on the early 90's Mortiis albums, clear across to modern stuff like Thangorodrim. and the only way to get this is to play stuff live and multitrack (audio), it's very hard to do with sequencing. and you won't get very far with monosynths. Basically it's a live or track-by-track keyboard thing, you have to embody it, you have to feel it. Perhaps a virtual poly/modular like Nord modular or Reaktor could be helpful.

Not a specific artist recommendation, but I've found some good stuff over on the sub-reddit:

Two of the best of the current crop.

imo this is all ambient (dark ambient) and I hate that kind of d&d vibe but this music posted here is what I'm really into. Rundgang um die transzendentale säule der singularität is always so beautiful...

Abdullah's rashim is doing some great music with the modular. his friend Varg also have music, some with Isorinne, that would fit this thread.

recently I'm into what Wagner odegard is doing

Dungeon Synth. It honestly doesn't surprise me that this subgenre of music exists. And with my other hobby being gaming, tabletop RPGs in particular, getting that Old School Rennisance feel of late 70s/early 80s of games like Advanced Dungeons & Dragons and Traveller is definitely helped by with a good soundboard of music.
Definitely want to start exploring this music. smile

I think i've found my favorite DS release ever, the 1998 demo by Au Milieu des Arbres. It's also one of the most minimal, in ways a kind of "devotional music" like the early popol vuh albums, but with its own style and obvious DS instrumentation. The first track.... so emotional. I think releases like this can draw fans of other ambient more closely into this genre.

Sorry no youtube that i could find...

hard to find stuff like Secret Stairways.. but this one comes very close

MindMachine
I had a few recommendations, but they are more 'Torture Sampler'.

Kirkwood is the best for bastille.
Esgal
Love for Burzum and Summoning, but no love for early Mortiis?

Mortiis deserves love especially how early all that stuff was, and how little he could draw from other music.

I also think -- this *could* have been dungeon synth, but was 20 years too early.... I guess it does count as BM in a lot of ways, first of course being seriously "black"...

orangehexagon
so... dungeon synth is a wide net for drone, ambient, metal, and electronica with a D&D kind of image attached to it? please educate me.
