Help me find this oscillator

Author Help me find this oscillator

Looking for a simple oscillator that has pretty much just sine output however, has a waveshaper that allows you to go to saws / squares. Pretty much looking for something similar to the standard Hordjik Osc but in 3u. love that sound

STO? No waveshaper but I believe it does basically what you want.

Sputnik Oscillator more or less does this.

Not in production anymore but they aren't hard to find.

is there a sine core oscillator? most are Tri or Saw and use shapers to achieve a Sine.

isn't that a 258 clone like the Plan B m15? still converts the tri-core to sine.

I won't pretend to know the Buchla ecosystem or schemas that well, but I do believe it's a Buchla clone(-ish).

So maybe not a sine core but does seem to check the "waveshape a sine into square/saw"-box.

Sputnik oscillator is a good choice.

Heres what Im talking about to be exact. one of the first modules he talks about is his oscillator and it sounds absolutely amazing... I would love to find something like this for 3u

The STO does have a wave shaper, and also a sub-oscillator output.

So you can simultaneously have a pure sine, wave-shaped sine and sub-oscillator output , linear & exponential FM and sync - all in 8HP. Very cool.

Another vote for STO, loved it so much I got 2. They have a very thick noise to them which I really enjoy.
neonmercury1
yeah sounds like sto to me. Or if your feeling frisky check out the Random source NTO.

STO sine is great. But the waveshape knob does not really make a saw nor a square: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UG4M7C_gQlw
The sub out is also a bit different, not really a beefy square

Ts-L is sine core, and can shape a sine into a square, and lots of other options, but not a saw: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LLkyTFM7Ta0

This is a feature I’m surprised isn’t included in more modules. Varying a wave shape from sine to anything else while frequency modulating or wave folding sounds amazing. I use this feature in Bazille all the time.

If I remember right, the Hordijk design is 'just' (ha) a sine-core with linear FM input - the waveshaping depends on self-modulation after some processing. Saw(ish - not a pure mathematical looking one) is just, I think, self-modulation, whereas square(again -ish) is perhaps post rectification or something [even modulation]. Damn, what's the term - 2nd order ....... balls to my memory.

Think this might help: https://vimeo.com/234514050
Edit - this::: https://forum.audulus.com/t/hordijk-harmonic-oscillator/297

Chebyshev polynomials!

The Disting does exactly what you want, and it sounds lovely.

Thanks for the replies. gonna check out some of the suggestions!

Hmmm, makes sense.
I have one of those Doepfer thru zero modules that only outputs a Sine, so if I’m running short of basic waveshapes, I just patch one of its outs into an FM input and it’ll bend into a softer version of a Saw.
Just have to retune as it drags itself off pitch.

Was thinking about going with the doepfer thru zero... Funny!

Note that while the STO does sound great, its sine is far from perfect, which is clearly audible. So if that matters to you for some reason, take it into consideration.

You could probably turn a sine into a squarewave easily by cranking up the input gain of the mixer/VCA/VCF you're sending the sine to. I often do this with a channel of my mixing desk. The red LED is your friend Rockin' Banana!

There’s the new Dannisound oscillator if you’re into DIY.
