pitch-gate pairs using ESX-8CV and ESX-8GT

Post by tom moody » Wed Sep 26, 2018 2:41 pm

Hi, I'm attempting to recreate the setup for ES40/ESXCV/ESX8GT in this demo video https://vimeo.com/85231630
That demo setup is a bit hard to follow because (i) the tracks are not expanded enough to show all the routing (ii) the output and hardware configurations on the voice controllers are not shown and (iii) the "aux" tracks aren't mentioned. In any case, I can't get it to work like that.
I can get correct, linked pitch and gate signals in the top three socket outputs of the 8CV and the 8GT hardware, and the lights flash as they should, using my own jury-rigged setup, but I don't know how to add additional pitch/gate pairs. Ideally I'd like 8 pairs. Is that possible?
My configuration doesn't match the Ableton configuration in the demo but it basically works.
In the screenshot below you can see the stereo signal in all tracks while 3 midi clips are playing. I have not changed the Voice Controller outputs from their "default" settings (doing so seems to interfere with pitch/gate).

In each instance of the Voice Controller software, I have "none" selected for hardware and ES4 as the target for the ESX 8CV combiner.
When I select ES4 or ESX8CV as the hardware the sound loses pitch or has inaccurate pitch. I did the ESX 8CV calibration and it worked, even though "none" is selected for the hardware.
In the Inputs of the ESX8CV combiner I chose 1, 3, and 7 as shown below (corresponding with "track in," 3/4 and 7/8 in the "Audio To" slots of VC tracks 1, 2, and 3):

And for gates I chose 3, 5, and 7 for my gate assignments. (The ESX-8CV is attached to Header 4 of the ES-40 and the ESX-8GT to Header 5.)
Again, this works, but I don't know why. I confess after reading all the documentation I can scrounge up, I still don't have a good handle on how the ESX8CV combiner works. Any assistance in explaining what I am doing wrong (or right for the wrong reasons) would be greatly appreciated.

Rather than write a big long post I figured it would be quicker just to make an 8-voice setup for you, which is attached.

Thank you very much! This works perfectly. I will study your settings and may have a follow-up question or two, if that's OK. (One thing I immediately noticed was I had the order of the ES40 plugins reversed. I was working from a template someone posted here, in my own pitiful defense.)

Is it possible to achieve this same configuration using an es-3, es-5, and es-8cv?

Edit: it actually doesn't matter about the es-5, I have an es-8cv and an es-8gt I can connect to my es-3.

Os would you be so kind as to upload another example but this time with the ES-9 + ES-5 + ESX-8CV ?

I've been trying for hours to get a 4 voice setup using the SW Voice controller but I cant seem to get it sorted. I found this thread, dowloaded your example and tried swapping out the ES40 controller for an ES-5 controller, changed all the applicable settings and I still have nothing.

I have an 8MD on channel 2 of the ES-5 and the 8CV is on channel 4

Thanks for your help

I found this two voice setup. You should be able to adapt it.

I tried to open the es5_8cv_8gt_voices.als.zip example that you kindly provided however Ableton didn't recognise the SW plugins therefore didn't load their settings.

I can open the es40_8cv_8gt_8voice.als.zip with the correct SW plugins loading, I tried editing this one and replacing the ES-4 controller with an ES-5 controller and came very close to it working however when I switched the SW Voice controller hardware option to ESX-8CV it stopped working again.

Could you please re-upload the es5_8cv_8gt_voices.als.zip project or help me to understand why the plugins cant be found by Ableton upon opening?

Otherwise, I'm going to try again and upload my project/screenshots another time. (perhaps in another thread as I don't want to highjack this one!)

Most likely my project used AUs and you only have VSTs?

You don't want to put the Voice Controller in a hardware mode. In these setups the hardware encoding is handled by the ES-5 Controller/ESX-8CV Combiner, so the VC's output just needs to be regular audio.

I gave up trying to get this to work as I had success getting the ESX-8CV to send all of my pitch and gate signals, I was so happy with this setup that I can honestly say it's been the most fun I've had wiggling in years! However this particular setup limits me to 4 voices and I've found myself returning to this thread in order to try and get an 8 voice setup with the 9 + 5 + 8CV to work again, to no success.

I loaded the project above, it works to an extent but there is loads of noise coming from the gate signals of the ES-5, I feel that I haven't done something correctly.

I don't own an 8GT, I was hoping my ES-5 would take care of the all of the Gate signals with the 8CV handling the pitch.

Once I get this worked out I'll be super happy, however getting to this stage is proving to be difficult!

I hate to keep requesting things from you Os, however I feel I've tried everything trying to get a ES9 + ES5 + 8CV pitch + gate pair setup to work and I'm really out of ideas at this point. Would it be possible to upload an example (even just a 2 voice) with this specific hardware?

With this in mind, once I get things worked out I'd like to create some kind of repository of template projects so that other people can just download them and get playing instantly without trying to configure things. Obviously there's so many variables (hardware, software, channels utilised etc) however with enough contributions this could really benefit the community, especially those low on patience! With the release of Ableton 11 I know that templates projects are becoming a more prominent feature, ie you can easily save projects as templates.

Thanks for your time.

Here's the same project as above converted to use VSTs.
