Farfisa Soundmaker

Post by bmot » Sun Dec 02, 2018 9:27 am

I picked up a partly working one of these recently. Quite a few problems to fix, does anyone have the service manual? There’s a manual on YouTube (yes, weird concept!) which goes through the manual one page per 5 seconds. I could screen grab each page but pdf would be great.

Also, I f anyone fancies helping out with troubleshooting (especially the monosynth section) then I’d love a bit of help. Otherwise I’ll probably fiddle around a bit, give up and just bring it to the tech.

Cheers

Here's a link to a PDF. Not my area of expertise at all but hope the PDF helps!

Fantastic, thank you! I’ve looked all over for this without success, so posting here for me is very much appreciated

That link gives me some rather ominous virus and malware notifications.

Proceed with caution.

Yeah Sendspace used to be better than that, sorry. I'll host it on my Google Drive and edit the post.

Thanks again for the manual, it has been put to use. I did open up the Farfisa and tried to find something unseated or “wrong” looking. But in the end I printed out the whole manual and took it, with withers farfisa , to my tech. I detected from his words and his face that he was rather pleased to have this unusual challenge to work on.

It was 150 euros. At this price it was a bit of a punt because I knew it would need some money spent on repairs - I’m currently waiting for the estimate. But if I can get it working, it’s a nice instrument, similar in a lot of ways to the more famous and sought after Syntorchestra

Sorry to revive this thread after so long, but I wanted to report that I had everything repaired, it took my tech 2 months of work and came at some expense. But it has been my dream machine for 2019, such a satisfying sound. However, I’ve decided to sell it, because it doesn’t really fit in with my band, and I don’t have space for it at home. And, let’s honest, I preordered the expressive e osmose and will need more than 1000 in a few months time!

I will be making a profit on this, make mistake: it took a lot of effort (including collection from Berlin, which is 500km away) and lot of time with my tech, and a big risk seeing as it was completely shot when I took ownership. Due to it’s rarity I feel good that one of the few remaining examples is good for another 40 years thanks to my perseverance, willingness to take a risk. Ah ok, you’re right, mostly thanks to my tech‘s amazing skills :hihi: .

If anyone is interested I’ve posted in BST, and I’m looking for 1000€

May I ask who the technician was?

There can never be enough brilliant technicians in a synthesiser community.

He goes by the name Löti, and can do anything analogue. He also fixed up my Syntorchestra. You can hire him out via Rare Guitar in Münster, he works on amps, guitars, synths etc but nothing digital. A really great guy who knows his stuff and clearly enjoys working on old synths. I gave him a copy of the schematics, and he did the whole thing without ever having seen it before in person.

Good luck with the sell and glad that you took the time and money to resurrect it. This was one of those odd machines that caught my eye when I saw them in the old Contemporary Keyboard magazines in the late 70's/early 80's as a kid.

Maybe a synthesizer 'museum' of some sorts might want to obtain it.

Seems like a fair price for a restored unit. Glad to see it lives again.

Additional thanks to Branco for the service manual. I don't have one of these beasts, but the schematics will be useful as circuit info in their own right. Plus Farfisa used the same bits of tech across many products over the years.

Seems that you were one of a few, if not the only one, that play the Soundmaker and the Synthorchestra in recent times. Do you feel difference? Can you tell us your impression about the two?

Check with Roger at Big City Music. He may have one up in the attic.

I actually prefer the Soundmaker. You can do more with it, for example I loved playing with the trigger input and using the very fast LFO. My favourite sound, on both instruments, is the brass. The Soundmaker has a touch bar with 4 (I think) destinations including brass filter cutoff, something the Syntorchestra doesn't have.

They are both with new owners now, but it was nice having a chance to know them for a while.

A plus point for the Syntorchestra, at least the wooden version, is that it's a much more beautiful instrument. The Soundmaker is rather an ugly beast in comparison, poor thing!
