Author MODULAR CHALLENGE: 1 rack, maximum options
fluxmonkey
so here's the challenge: assume that someone wants to play westcoast/noize/bug music (not melodic lines or pads). what selection of modules would you recommend that would provide the maximum number of sonic options? here's the restrictions:

* currently available commercial modules only, no DIY
* modules must all be in the same physical format (frac, or euro, or motm, etc.)
* you CAN include modules from different manufacturers
* one 19" rack in whatever format you choose
* assume 1 external signal mixer, with effects (Behringer 1202FX).
* optional: examples of patches that prove your selection's versatility

i've been having fun thinking about this, myself, and i'm honing my list as we speak. looking forward to your recommendations.

i think one rack is too limiting, you should go with two... in frac one rack would mean roughly 5 modules only

if you HAVE to stick with one rack, the most flexibility would probably be in Euro, because you can get lots of skinny modules, probably a mix of skinny Doepfer and Plan B ELF modules to get the MOST flexibility from the small space....
Muff Wiggler
maybe the best solution for your specific application, would be to nicely ask Tom Bugs if it was possible for him to release his bugmodular modules for sale at some point... the stuff I've seen him posting from his custom modular seems to fit a LOT of leftcoast/bugmusic stuff into a really tight space
parasitk
Hmm one single 19" rack width?

A Serge panel?

A Wiard 300 system filled with any random 6 modules?

A Buchla 4 space boat with whatever?

Am I cheating? hihi

If I were doing a Frac system focused on buggish stuff), I'd start with:

Wiard Noise Ring, Borg 2, Bananalogue VCS, STG Wave Folder, and I suppose a VCO of some sort.

...but I wouldn't stop with just one row! w00t

West coast, one rack? Oh just guess my suggestion smile

* Wogglebug for uncertainty, 8 kinds of audio, percussion, clock
* VCO for audio source, FM mod source, noise/rancom voltage source
* WFC for wavetable synthesis, normal audio outs, quantization, MARF
* Envelator for function generation, LFO, AR Env, ASR Env, crossfading
* Borg1 for filter, VCA, two LFOs
* Mixolator for final output VCA, mixing, pan/fade, ring mod

Done.

Gee, never would have guessed you'd go with that!

Easy, a Moog filter, a spring reverb. Oops, out of space oops
plord
Yeah, I know, "goes without saying", etc. But it's sure a good option, no?

Two Serge M-odules, say a Gator and a Creature, would work out to similar costs and a similar *amount* of variety (though a very different kind of variety).

Don't disagree with parasitik's Frac row either, and it's 1/3 the price or less.

Frac rack, Blacet VCO, Wiard Noise Ring, Wiard Boogie Filter, Wiard/Blacet MiniWave, Metalbox ASM ADSR & Blacet Dual Linear VCA

i like plord's suggestion the best though smile
wetterberg
well, since pl0rd can do 5units, who says we can't do 2x3 units?
parasitk
Oooh yes, a MiniWave. If I was pressed I might replace the WaveFolder with a MiniWave since it can do the waveshaping thing too, but I'd rather replace the VCO with a MiniWave style oscillator that can drive itself and take FM (like a Modcan VCDO in Frac) and keep the WaveFolder.

I totally wouldn't bother with a typical ADSR though. I'd rather have a more multi-purpose modules (like a VCS) than something so ... dedicated.

The rule is one row! Regardless of height razz
wetterberg
how about a small Buchla boat? surely those could be rackmounted?

That's one 19" rack, buddy! Learn to read! wink

gah, feeling cranky. Heading over to CDM, heheh.

Ha in that case, I'll build a wood cabinet with no Fracs and call it "one rack".

well then we agree!

Rasta-nana

seriously, though - if it *has* to be a single module height I'd go with 5u kit... Wiard/Serge would probably be the best bet for a complete system?
MrDys
I'll chime in for the Euro side of things:

I'd build it around ELF LFOs. They're great for both modulation and as audio sources.

4x Plan B ELF LFO
1x Doepfer A107 Multitype Morphing Filter
1x Plan B Model 25 Multitasking Audio Processor (ringmod, waveshaper, vca)
1x Plan B Model 13 Dual Timbral Gates
1x Harvestman Malgorithm (or the new Doepfer VC bit crusher; great for control signal fuckery as well as audio)
1x Harvestman Polivoks (or a Doepfer A106-1 Xtreme filter)

If you really need an envelope, I'd swap some things around and get a Doepfer A142.
wetterberg
MrDys, I'm with ya on the ELFs, but not so much on the morphing filter - it's enormous.
kidtesla
I'd go with the Long Beach special.
Livewire AFG/Dual Cyclotron/Dalek Modulator/Vulcan Modulator (84HP)
~or~ Livewire AFG/Dual Cyclotron/FrequenSteiner/Dalek Modulator (86HP)
(I'm a big Mike Brown fan(does it show? lol )

i was actually thinking psycho lfo but then i realized an EG would be necessary. actually out of all the modules listed only the VCO, EG and VCA are dedicated modules but hell they're important building blocks.

The VCS can do many things but not as well as the others on their own.

For a MOTM rack you'd get 10U to play with. Here is one possible configuration that is pure Synth Tech MOTM and should be lots of "noisy" fun! :

2U - MOTM-101 Noise/Sample and Hold
1U - MOTM-190 µVCA (dual VCA/ring modulator)
1U - MOTM-310 Micro Voltage-Controlled Oscillator
1U - MOTM-310 Micro Voltage-Controlled Oscillator
1U - MOTM-390 Micro LFO Module (2 LFO's and one is VC'd)
1U - MOTM-485 GX-1 VCF
2U - MOTM-510 WaveWarper
1U - MOTM-800 ADSR Envelope Generator

actually, one can argue that EGs aren't as important, really. Especially for
Quote:
someone [who]wants to play westcoast/noize/bug music (not melodic lines or pads)

In that case, and in that size, retriggerable, cv-able LFOs would be more appropriate, at least if it were my rig.

New challenge! Demonstrate interesting noise patch where an EG is essential to the sound! hyper
