anyone of you 'wigglers' ever see something like this? i can't make out the name and it has a stereo plug as well as being quite heavy for its diminutive size

That looks like a telegraph key, probably intended for ham radio use

Looks like some kind of signal transmitter device, like Morse etc.

That's called a bug. I bought a Vibroplex brand one for my brother a few years back. As kind of mentioned above that they are a bit quicker than the standard up/down type of morse key.
