PORTAL is a wave wrapping harmonic distortion. Similar to a wave folder, PORTAL multiplies the harmonics of a signal going through it. Unlike a wave folder once the input has hit the threshold voltage the output will jump to zero instead of folding back on itself, creating a sharp transition almost like the wave has traveled through a portal. When fed with a triangle or sawtooth this can create an effect similar to oscillator sync, but without the need for a second modulating oscillator. When fed with complex audio sources the results are devastating, turning just about anything that goes through it into mad screams from another dimension. In addition to the normal "Wrap" output, the "Round" and "Spike" outputs give alternate flavors of distortion based on the main wrapping algorithm. "Round" is similar to a bit-crusher or voltage quantizer but achieved completely with analog circuitry, whereas "Spike" creates a sharp voltage spike whenever a new wrap is made. All four front panel parameters are voltage controlled with dedicated attenuators or attenuverters to further sculpt all three outputs.

Portal is 12HP and sells for $295

Three distinct flavors of distortion available simultaneously:

-WRAP performs a modulo operation on the input.

-ROUND performs an integer division operation on the input.

-SPIKE outputs a small trigger whenever a new wrap is generated.

Four voltage controllable parameters each with a dedicated attenuverter or attenuator:

-WRAP controls the harmonic multiplication amount of the wrapping effect, with the maximum wrap range being set by the high/ low switch

-BIAS adds a DC offset to the input signal, allowing a second signal to be mixed in or for the input signal to be clipped.

-FEEDBACK sends the output of the wrap effect back into its input causing self oscillation, ultrasound burps, higher wrap amounts and generally chaotic behavior.

-TRACK makes the wrapping effect follow the signal better or worse, also allowing the output signal to be completely turned off.

Portal utilizes high quality parts throughout:

-Power supply is reverse power protected with high quality TPS7A series voltage regulators reducing any power noise from other modules.

-Entire audio path uses OPA1654 op amps.

-Internal VCAs are Cool Audio SSM2164

this is amazing

gnarly!

Sounds brutal (that's a good thing). Nice clear demo video too. Congrats on adding a new module to your lineup.

I like wavefolders and distortion. That is a good video. Want this now.

this sounds great. congrats!

Nice! I really dig the aesthetic of the mystic circuit modules. Original, and they look retro futuristic somehow. Mr. Green

Thanks for the kind words everyone grin.

Aesthetically I try to go for something sort of oldschool Buchla - adjascent without copying them outright. I used brushed aluminum instead of the normal satin finish, UV printing which gives the raised and crinkly feel of silkscreening, and the silver center colorful knobs. People have asked for awhile that I offer black panels, and honestly I might cave at some point and do it, but I personally prefer the look of black on silver as it makes for high contrast and looks really sleek.

Also just want to mention that Analog Haven and Big City Music both have Portals in stock. I have shipments on their way to Patchwerks, Midwest Modular, Modular Eight, Three Wave Music and Escape From Noise. If you want me to get in touch with your local retailer let me know.

Wild Wicked Horned Toads! Sounds and looks awesome! Good job! Looks like the Spike out gets a hell of a workout. Surprised that jack isn't liquid cooled to prevent overheating. lol

All hail the Hypno-toad!

Sounds ace!

Wanted to post a short video from blush response using the Portal with the angle grinder. Ive found a lot of synergy with these two modules myself.

yeah, what can I say, had this thing for a hot minute and it makes me feel good in all the right places. highly recommended SlayerBadger!

Yeah, this is a really unique module, precisely the sort of distortion I like in a modular system, with a set of useful controls. I may end up getting one at some point, sadly I just don't have the cash for these sorts of dedicated modules, lately. I'm thinking this would pair really well with the drezno system I have, even if they're just operating on different sounds in the same mix.

Hey folks, a few updates. Andrew Huang did an awesome demo for Portal on his second channel which you can find here.

You can also see some Portal in action from Surachai here:

The last thing I needed in my system was yet another distortion, but I received Portal today and wow I am glad I got it! The range of sounds I'm getting is perfectly on point with what I was looking for. From a subtle sizzle, to absolute destruction.

What I love most is that, to me, it can be reminiscent of digital effects such as down sampling, bit reduction, or wavetable indexing, but without the typical digital harshness (which can also have its place). However destruction it brings, it maintains this analog crunch and range. Perfect. And with CV control over all parameters (with attenuators!). What a great design.
