Could any EDM experts recommend other music in a similar vein to this? other than the other Northern Electronics stuff (some of which is a bit, erm, abstract for my tastes)? grin
Sanys
Plastikman - Consumed
Fog Door
Thanks for the recommendation Sanys, cool record thumbs up
Sanys
u might also like Shifted, he has plenty of music released. I like his later music
giugno
posh isolation has a lot of stuff in this vein especially in recent years, namely croatian amor (his older stuff, such as "the world" are maybe closer to this) and vanity productions.

also look into the labels vaagnar, strange rules, vienna press, summer isle, and janushoved.

Thanks giugno, I'll check that stuff out thumbs up

Acid with a lot of reverb? Here’s some: https://soundcloud.com/bettyfordacid

eek! That's a bit reductive, in my view it is not quite as simple as that. Still, your link to acid with not quite enough reverb is very good, so thank you wink

This album was the first thing Varg did in the electronic realm, there's some interviews about it in which he says that coming from a black metal background, it's not that influenced by other electronic music.
I'll let you decide if you buy all this or not, but I think that it explains why the atmospheres are so ethereal, dark but not harsh, and also, quite simple in therms of composition.
And that's the reason why i've always been fascinated by this record. First output of the guy, and man, he sure hits my spot.
Unfortunately, it's a one-of-his-kind shit. Maybe you'll find some abdulla rashim's old records that are somehow similar,
or some of Varg's own other works (that tape on berceuse héroique is in the same spirit). And to keep going with him, his DARFDHS project with Isorinne is really really good too (that green album on northern electronics is a fav of mine)
As for plastikman man, well, maybe acid in a reverb is not very new, but it's really really far from the atmospheres depicted here.
Ho! Maybe you should check TM404/Mokira/Tilliander, it's more mellow, but closer to whatever ritualistic shit Varg's been doing in the past than our missed plastikman.

Never heard of Misantropen until now, I like it! Not much in the way of Acid but maybe Abdulla Rashim? Check out Asayita, I really like that one. Also, Acronym's "River Red Gum" is similar...maybe a bit faster than what you're after though....also both associated with Northern Electronics. grin

Maybe some of these? But not completely sure what you are looking for.
Varg played in my town but I am not a huge fan as such. Never the less, he makes cool music and has a very nice approach to doing his own thing.

I have a lot more links, but got a bit tired and again not sure what exactly you are looking for, is it the slow atmospheric acid and lots of reverb, is it the techno aspect or the old skool electro drum machine vibe? or just everything mixed together? smile

I'd recommend Anthony Linnell's album Consolidate for a similar mystical Northern forest atmosphere to Misantropen:

If I put my TT-303 and Juno 6 through a space echo, I can create similar textures to Misantropen but the atmosphere is lacking. There's something dark and nihilistic about Varg's approach that makes him the missing link between Death metal Dungeon Synth and Techno.

Very nice. Thank you.

you know, Mr Varg and Mr Linnell are actually running the same label together so...but if you're going down this route, you might as well explore their roots, which will invariably lead you to Burzum and that by itself is a handful in manifold nefarious ways. If you're digging the electronic stuff, Burzum (consisting of the infamous Varg Vikernes (sounds familiar?)) made two albums entirely on like a casio keyboard while he was imprisoned in the 90s. Dauði Baldrs and Hliðskjálf , though I'd wager the latter is more your cup of tea, if at all. interestingly, a lot of even the 'old guard' of Black Metal has dabbled in electronic-y stuff here and there. and then there's totally different but still related (and much later) albums like Perdition City by Ulver, which has a whole bunch of influences and sounds. that one is really quite something, and personally I don't like the singing, but musically quite entertaining indeed.

trveness and stuff Flamey

Good post Moerder thumbs up

So, what I'm taking away from this thread, is that Varg - Misantropen is pretty much unique, perhaps even among the artist's own back catalogue. Unsurprisingly, there is tons of sort of similar stuff that is very good but a lot of that stuff is either just "acid with a lot of reverb" or more obviously BM influenced, often straying into dungeon synth/dark ambient territory. Still, what a fucking great record Guinness ftw! nanners

Agree with the TM-404 recommendations - particularly the first self titled album. You also might check out Norin's Bakom Planteringen.
