Anybody tried RME headphone outputs for new Ableton cv/gate?

Anybody tried RME headphone outputs for new Ableton cv/gate?

Post by johny_gtr » Sun Aug 18, 2019 12:53 pm

It looks like RME headphones outs are DC-coupled.
New ableton version supports cv/gate/sync/tempo outs.

I just need start/tempo sync from DAW to modular for track-by-track recording to DAW and be in sync. And I have RME.

Is anybody who tried this configuration? How stable is this solution?

Thank you

I suspect you have your answer by now but i'll drop my experience here anyway.

I spent days tinkering and testing with a multimeter and many different cable configurations on my FF800 after a mass of misinformation from an RME forum mod and then a bloody RME dev.

I conclude:
Fireface800 can not provide constant voltage through the DC Coupled headphone output i.e CV pitch.

But works fine for Gate/triggers.

I use Live 10 CV Tools
Just make sure you have a decent signal level going to the modular.

I'm getting crap latency tho from CV Tools so i send say a trig from the CV plug to an EXT Audio Effect on a different track which sends the CV to CH9 or CH10 on the RME and receives the audio, adding -1.31ms delay on the channel with delay compensation active.
Works a treat and no thanks to Ableton support either.
If you use a standard 'Y cable' you get +Volts on Tip and -Volts on the Ring,
giving you a possible 2 CV outs.

In the the 'CV Triggers' instrument in Live you can send either Plus or Negative volts trigger.
Here's a confusing pdf of all RME interfaces and their DC coupled capabilities.
RME DC coupled outputs
I ended up buying an UltraLite mk4 and i'm having all the CV fun.

Thank you sam_saw for sharing your experience. Basically i need just run and clock from ableton to sequencer for multitracking with tight timing.

Maybe just pulse triggers audio tracks work well without cv tools

Absolutely, i've used all sorts as trigs like rim shots, hats, pulses, just have to tweak the lengths and gain so no double triggers come from the rack etc

I have an RME UCX and the left and right of the headphone outputs are DC coupled. :tu:
