My ES-5 mk3 has arrived, I've connected it to the ES-3 mk4 and am attempting to operate it with VCV Rack and the Expert Sleepers 8GT and ES-5 encoders. In VCV rack's "Audio-16" module, "To device" #5-12" correspond with my RME's ADAT out channels #1-8, and I'm feeding the ES-5 encoder to channels #7-8 for the ES-3.

(In fact, I determined that as long as one clock goes to #8, regardless of which other input I send the second clock to, it will be as expected and correct on the hw es-5)

What could be going on? Is this a vcv module bug, a sound settings issue, or a module hw problem?

I'd guess it's something in your TotalMix settings. The ES-5 needs a straight 0dB stereo feed of the signal leaving the plug-in.

The problem was occurring with ADAT 7/8 set to unity gain, no eq, no fx on 'software playback' and 'hardware outputs' faders in RME TotalMix FX.

If I go into TotalMix and bump up ADAT 7/8 in 'Software playback' from 0.0 (Unity Gain) to 0.1 (Unity + 0.1), e.g.: the lowest possible increment above unity gain, at that point things appear to be working almost nominally and I can get the clock sent into the 8GT VCV module's inputs #1-7 back out correctly on channels #1-7 of the hardware ES-5, however... if I output that same clock signal to the 8th input on VCV's 8GT, it will output correctly on the HW ES-5's channel #8 but simultaneously lose all output on the HW ES-5 channel #1.

I'd like to get all eight output channels working correctly together, is this possible?

It should be, with everything at unity gain. Perhaps something changed in Rack 1.0. Let me check.

It's working for me. Also in the new Rack 1.1.4 FWIW.

Could I see a screenshot of your TotalMix?

Plz excuse in case I'm hijacking this thread - since i'm a newbie on this forum I can't start a new thread atm.

I'm posting here because I think I'm experiencing the same issue from the max/msp side. Also it might be the same problem as discussed in these threads as well (i see some similarities):

My Setup:
I'm working in Max/Msp 8, on a Win 10 Machine, ES-8 used as main Interface (@44.1kHz), ES-3 connected to the ES-8 via ADAT. For sending Gates, I'm using the [es5encoder~] object in max. I have the ES-5 connected to the ES-3's Outputs 7/8 and an ESX-8GT connected to the ES-5. (The ES-5 is a mk3 Batch 20171031).

The Problem stays the same, no matter if I connect the ES-5 to the ES-8 or to the ES-3.

I've been troubleshooting this for quite a while now and I can reproduce the problem consistently.

The table chromakey has provided here:
"120BPM clock to 8GT #1.
expected: clock out on hw ES-5 #1
actual: no output" (...)

seems to show the same behaviour I'm seeing.

Configuration 1: ES-5 connected to ES-3's channels 7/8, ES-5's Jumper is on 2, ESX-8GT is connected to ES-5's GT2 Header.

both configurations show the exact same behaviour.

Now, I found a 'workaround' that gives me the correct outputs. And which leads me into believing it's an hardware issue on the ES-5. Have a look:

Although this configuration yields the correct output response, it's obviously not the way it should be.

please note that i tried if Windows' (and Max/Msp's) Volume control is interfering with the values and I took care that this is not the case. Also, (as mentioned) I tried connecting the ES-5 to the ES-8 instead of the ES-3, I tried various DAC channels on both units (with correct jumper settings on the ES-5 respectively). The problem stays exactly the same.

I've read about the capacitor swap solution mentioned in some of the threads i've linked in the beginning, namely: ES-5's C12 should be 56pF.
(The ES-3 is a mk4 as mentioned in those threads)

Do you think that's gonna solve it, os? I can do that, no problem.
Last thought: If that's the case, the 'incompatibly' is not only between ES-3 mk4 and ES-5 mk3 but also ES-8 and ES-5 mk3.

Again, sorry for hijacking - I figured i post my results here since it's the most recent thread regarding ES-5 issues.
Hope this might help somebody else too.

@os, here's my TotalMix setting, VCV: clock->8GT->ES-5->outs 11+12 (ADAT 7/8). No EQ, no FX, unity gain and only ADAT 7/8 channel sent to ADAT 7/8. VCV Rack did just update to v1.1.4, no apparent change in situation here.

That looks OK.

@roborobert I don't think your issue the capacitor thing. That basically made one bit inaccessible. You look to have a numerical scaling issue, similar to @chromakey.

Could be in the drivers. Could be Windows. Maybe I should check a Windows build of Rack.

Seems that Rack on Windows is problematic. Testing with my RME UCX:
- mac, Silent Way in Live -> OK
- mac, VCV -> OK
- windows, Silent Way in Live -> OK
- windows, VCV -> not OK

I'll have a look at the code and maybe talk to Andrew.
