For a special art performance Go with the flow at Port25 during the Nachtwandel im Jungbusch I had the mission to make sounds out of a water installation, so I researched the internet for proper building instructions to make a hydrophone by myself, because they are quite expensive and rare. I found an excellent building instructions shared on a meeting of Acoustical Society of America.

IS there any recording of your finished piece? I've often wondered how good a hydrophone would be at messing with sounds?

Thanks for posting

It doesn't mess with sounds, it enables you to record sounds where you can't use a normal microphone.

Here's one I built for recording Cary Grace's version of '1983... (A Mermaid I Should Turn To Be)' :

It's just a piezo element inside a waterproof can connected like a balanced mic. It took quite a bit of waterproofing with sealant.
All the "underwater" sounds on the track were recorded with this, mostly in a bathtub, and messing comprised lowering two octaves on tape or mixing with "overwater" sounds from another microphone. Lowering a vibrating metal part into the water and recording the pitch change in and out of the water was one source of sound.

So if DIY stands for Do It Yourself, I guess DYI stands for Do Yourself In?
