[Case DIY] Tell me about Tolex or whatever

Post by sutekina bipu-on » Fri Nov 08, 2019 8:44 pm

I am building a couple euro cases and while the bare wood look has its place, i'm looking to dress a few of them up to look a little nicer. I also have a nice rolling rack / mixer case which has bad rips in whatever fuzzy material is on the outside, so i was thinking of re-upholstering it.

First of all where do you guys look for this stuff? I'm pretty positive Tolex is a brand name and not the name of the actual material i'm looking for.

Beyond that, how the heck do you start with putting it on. I assume i'm gonna need a staple gun or something.

I swear i googled this and must not know wtf to look up because i could not find guides for what i need to know. I only know digital stuff not carpentry. I was able to build my cases without a guide but dont want it to end up looking like a 2nd graders art project

...and these:

1) Wrapping with Tolex

2) Wrapping with Carpet

Also, check all the video series. These are for road cases but with a little imagination the same techniques can be applied for eurorack etc.

Some history about Tolex:

“Tolex", is a 1940s-era brand name that belonged not to Fender but to the General Tire and Rubber Company of Akron, Ohio.

The fabric covering that Fender uses today is not Tolex, but rather textured vinyl !!! :woah:

Check nearest music/guitar store. They're no strangers to order spare parts and the likes, and will probably be able to order amp covering for you.

Primarily, you need a good glue coating. Stapling is good, but only for attaching the last flaps on the inside.

I strongly recommend to carefully plan the process when glueing it onto your case, as there are a lot of things to consider that is hard to reverse. As mentioned already, there are a lot of great instruction videos on youtube.

...just to add make sure to use a really good quality glue. Some years back I re-tolexed a Leslie speaker cabinet and used a cheap brand spray glue - only to find that a few months later a lot of the edges lifted and began to curl up...needed doing all over again.
