Susumu Yokota

Post by onthebandwagon » Sat May 23, 2020 4:44 pm

Just discovered his album Symbol. Surprised he’s not mentioned around here much and sad to read he died so young. Such a lush, upbeat yet melancholic album, although almost entirely composed of samples of classical pieces. Find it a bit more creative than the Max Richter Vivaldi album which I also like. Read he was a successful house DJ, didn’t read much more.

A few songs inform Sakura. Wow. Thanks! One track sounds like he’s using a sample from Eno’s Apollo.

Keep on listening to the album, the best has not yet come !
An ambient masterpiece IMHO. Such a lovely album for a dreamy afternoon.

The song with the Joni Mitchell sample threw me for a loop. Think I’ll spend a lot more time with this album before moving on to anything else by him. The album is a great companion piece for Eno’s Apollo and I would say much more consistently enjoyable.

Sakura is a masterpiece.

I also really love Acid Mt. Fuji, it is a great ambient take on the classic acid 808/303 combo :

I bought "Acid Mt. Fuji" on Bandcamp yesterday.

I now think the Atom™ release "Alpha Txt Live at Labyrinth 2012" is like a love letter to Yokota :

Performed at Labyrinth Festival, Naeba, Japan, September 2012.
Programming and arrangement: Atom™.
Rain recording by Material Object.
Edited and mastered by Atom™ at the Bowman Suite, Santiago de Chile, 2014.

I am curious about these Yokota releases:

Ebi : "Zen"

Mantaray " : "Numinous Island"

Has anyone heard them?

.
