which frac filter?

Author which frac filter?

i'm expanding my frac rack, and am looking for a voltage controlled state variable filter. i already have a blacet dual filter, but wanted something vc. any thoughts?
Kwote
Wiard Borg or Boogie are the obvious best choices. the Filthy Filter is exactly like the Dual but with VC so if you're lookin for variety steer clear. otherwise it's decent for the price.

beyond that it's a tough call. Livewire's Frequensteiner appeared in frac but they don't make it anymore. you'd have to find it used.

perhaps STG's lineup would work. something more weird would be the Metalbox Bi-N-Tic.

there are a couple filters you could DIY as well. CGS offers the synthacon and i think something a bit simpler. not sure what MFOS offers filter wise but i'm pretty sure they have something.

i'm considering the filthy filter, but it is just like the dual. i'm not completely sold on the dual filter though. i mainly use it for kick drum. i got a good deal on it, and couldn't pass it up. i'm going to get the metalbox kick eventually so i might get rid of the df. i'd love to get a wiard filter, but the used market is the only way to get them right now. i'm trying to make my blacet rig my main rig. it's getting close. 8)

edit: just saw the links. thanks. i'll check them out.

check your pm's.

depending on face plate size (Superladder and VCO need 3 frac spaces) every Oakley module will fit in a Blacet frac rack Using Schaffer panels

Price is similar to the 5U modules

MOTM have pcbs too...
Cat-A-Tonic
and MOTM also has a couple of filters in Frac.
Their Moog clone is supposed to be the closest to the original,
and the GX looks really interesting.
It is a clone of the filter in the Yamaha GX-1, one of the most expensive synths ever built, and an elder brother to the CS-80.

As soon as Grant gets better (if he gets better waah ) I'll find my balls (and chunk of change) and order the Wiard 1200s.

Other than that I'm very tempted by commercial filters (Blacet Filthy, or MOTM GX),
but I want to finish some of my backlog first and then see how necessary more filters really are.

In the DIY pile are:
Ian Fritz - Threeler (triple HP/LP)
Luna (Somatic Circuits) - Dark Side (which is an excellent deal right now with the Australian exchange rate!)
Bridechamber/CGS - Bi-N-Tic (this version has extra waveshapes in VCO mode!)
Fonitronic - PS3100 (mono triple bandpass + LFO) (there is a stereo version available now too!)

I am also really tempted to order the J.Haible 40 Band String Filter.

+1 on the Wiard Borg or Boogie--increadible modules. i give the Borg a slight edge, and it seems a bit more versatile, but you can't go wrong with either.

the blacet filthy filter is NOT just like the dual; i just checked the schemos and the sound, quite different. the filthy is a very capable all-around VCF, not as agressive as it's name would imply.

i highly recommend the CGS Steiner filter as well, in some ways a good complement to either of the previously mentioned. if you're up for some DIY it's a bargain; the "euro" version makes construction easy even for first timers; a frac FPD file for the faceplate is posted on my site: http://www.fluxmonkey.com/fluxGear.htm

oakley's filters are fantastic, high quality and very much in the mainstream of what most folks expect from a VCF.

the MOTM GX is very agressive, i've only found a few "sound effect" kinds of contexts where it fit, for me. i havent heard their ladder.

I had one. It was not bad, kinda plain for my tastes. The best part (for me) was the built in EG/LFO. But in the end I traded it for a Blacet I/O and I've never looked back.

It appears that he snagged the filthy. I don’t see it on ebay anymore. Sorry for assuming if I’m wrong.

Yeah I’m just saying what John Blacet himself said in regard to the dual vs. filthy. Obviously the filthy will edge out the dual because of 10x or 100x filthy switch, notch and allpass, simultaneous outs of LP/BP/HP & Notch, and all the CV. 1v oct in, cv routable to freq or Q with built in invertable attenuator, Q cv and cv for scanning through LP/BP/HP/Notch.

smile

but at it's core the dual is basically a filthy without all the extras. or atleast so was told. my ears hear a bit of a difference in basic A/B tests but not much.

oh. sorry to hear. well anyway, how's the MFOS? which ones and how many do you have?
johnnymad
i've got ray's 12 db state variable filter and the 24 db lowpass filter. they're both great. i'm trying to make my diy synth and my blacet rig into two different instruments, thus the search for another filter.
