Bananalog Serge VCS Vs Plan B Poly Envelope

I dont have the Bananalog VCS are the Plan B Poly Envelope very similar? Apart from the retrigger?
thetwlo
Pretty sure you can't use the m10 as a Filter or Slew Limiter like the VCS.
Kwote
don't know anything about the plan b but i have a VCS and my favorite feature is using it as a VCO. best part being the waveform is adjustable. i typically use it for my basslines.
thetwlo
The m10 can be pretty interesting as a VCO as well. Haven't compare the sound of the two.
felix
I love love love the M10, but I would say VCS over the M10.

Here's the unique features of each:

M10
Dedicated upward ramp output
Built-in bipolar inverting attenuator for AD outputs
End Of Attack Trigger output
Cycle Gate input

VCS
Audio rate operation with 1v/Oct CV in
Signal input for Envelope following and slew limiting
Voltage control of Attack or Decay individually or together (M10 is always together)
--at least one or two more that I can't remember...I don't have one myself

So, in short, me personally, even loving my M10s as much as I do, I would take the VCS. The only thing I might miss is the Cycle gate input on the M10.
felix
Actually, wait a minute, you ALREADY HAVE A VCS!!! More than one in fact. It's the same thing as a Serge Universal Slope Generator!

And, if you hadn't already come to the conclusion, the M10 is more or less one half of Serge Dual Transient Generator, just with some slightly different features/modifications.

Is there a VCS kit or are these otherwise available for euro?

Bananlogue made them in the past, things look up in the air on them now, a "we'll be back soon" sign doesn't neccesarily mean that he'll be back. :( I know he'd sell a bunch if he'd just make them again. I'd take at least one... Like a heroin junkie smoking a joint to ease that Serge lust... grin

On a side note, do the Serge panels work on a volt/oct? Could a euro system be predictably used with serge panels (as long as the banana converts).

Yes they do, and yes it could.

Anyone got euro schematics+BOM?

I'll build em'

Dammit, you should have lied to me, the evil is growing inside me. lol

Sorry, it's been growing inside me as well...had to spread it around.

You're all Serge-pregnant.
Chuck E. Jesus
gotta agree with the Serge lust, something about those panels really appeals to me...such a removal of the "normal" modular stuff...but it will have to remain a pipe dream, i won't have that kind of money to throw around in the near/late future (if ever) ...

as far as i know you should be able to get PCB's directly from Seth if you contact him. however he won't aid you in any way. no BOM, no schematics.

of course there's the chance the VCS PCB is out of stock.

seriously, i just don't get it

What was the retail price on a VCS?
Anyone know?
felix
I can't remember for sure. It was more than $200, but less than $300.

I want to say $245... seriously, i just don't get it

I've paid mine (I've got two of them ... hi, hi, hi, ...) around $200 (with blue LED, direct from Seth Nemec, including shipping to France), in 2006.

AAaah, I'm jealous, and mad at myself. I could have easily bought some back when I was first putting my system together. They were available. I was just stupid and back then didn't "get" exactly what they were capable of and how cool they were, even when people explained it to me.

very frustrating

@dkcg - Awesome! I've been doing that a lot actually, experimenting with using the M10 as an oscillator and my other M10 to modulate it. Pretty interesting.

I honestly use my M10 way more for an audio source than a envelope.

Here are my pros and cons:

M10,

pros:
great audio source
great lfo
variable wave shape (can be automated easily)
end of cycle trigger out
end of attack trigger out
fast response to get vatrols ringing
built in attenuator on output

cons:
does not go slow enough for me, as mine gets 3.5 minutes max
time base control is only effective in certain settings

VCS,
pros:
one of my favorite oscillators
my FAVORITE lfo
awesome "filter"
end of cycle trigger out
slew
trigger delay
cool manual waveshaping options
cross mod tones can be archived
it makes me breakfast and tucks me into bed

cons:
doesn't go quite fast enough to get them vactrols ringing just right.
doesn't allow "automated" waveshaping

Coffee Addiction FTW

couldn't you kinda automate things with the rise and fall cv's?

It changes the pitch more than the shape... In non-linear mode, when you manually tweak the attenuation pots you get some SICK waveshaping that is great for adding movement to drones. I have tried to replicate this with CV and it never really works.

Its ok, for a lot of my stuff I enjoy hand tweaked over cv... Adds some humanity and "realness" to more drawn out pieces.
Kwote
yeah i hadn't attempted it yet in oscillator mode but the manual tweakage i've of course enjoyed.

Yeah man, its sweet isn't??? Its even better in osc mode!
