wowowowow

i'm just speechless. This stuff is BEAUTIFUL. And the sound... eek! hyper SlayerBadger! screaming goo yo

The Waveform City has a Classic VCO board inside it, although only partially populated for a few of the waveshape outputs. This VCO sounds *INCREDIBLE*, wtf?!? Just smooth and big and full and meaty all at once. It's obviously still hyper honeymoon period as these only got here a few hours ago, but I have to say I expected to be very impressed but instead am ABSOLUTELY JAWFLOOR BLOWN AWAY

And they are absolute works of art, just beautiful. I'm in love. I've waited 10 years dreaming of getting my hands on these and it was worth it. omg. So that's two that are here and another 7 on the way. Then hopefully I can scare up three more eventually to fill out that second rack.

crazy days, wow so awesome.

btw, I bought these from Dave Vosh on the Wiard list, he sold a bunch of stuff recently. One of the best guys I have ever dealt with, he's not a member here but after one of the smoothest, friendliest deals ever I am very happy to vouch for him.

In Wiard land that's a whole synth you got there!

I'm just a little jealous, guess I'll go play with my miniwave before some one buys it...

Sweet!!!! I was just thinking the other day that I should call Grant and up the order I placed last year from 2 modules to 6 + the controller. Its going to be a long wait but it'll be worth it.

How does the Waveform City compare to the MiniWave?

always the ray of sunshine aren't ya lol

i think everyone who has used them agrees the jacks he uses are excellent. I've used the 1200 series modules for years (same jacks) and they are the ONLY jacks on modules I've never had a problem with.

Blacet's jacks come second, only ever had trouble with one of them.

Sasha the WC is pretty close to an MW - the MW provides CV control of Bank and Wave, while the WC only provides CV control of Wave. The WC does also have a VCO with it, and obviously the MW does not.

Better then switchcrafts?

I think u can stamp the word 'excellent' only on switchcrafts.

Same family, different species smile The WFC lacks the CV controllable Bank input of the MW; you only have CV control of Wave pointer in the WFC, not bank and wave together. Unless you are using one of the smoothly interpolated ROMs like the Vector 1 and 2, this isn't much of a hindrance. You need a saw source to drive the MW, the WFC has that whole analog osc built in and gives you the saw, triangle, and sine wave outputs as a bonus. Oh, and the WFC has that built in VCA and AR envelope.

If I had only those two modules, screw the filter capabilities, I'd put the Omni into self-oscillation and work up some crazy FM sounds SlayerBadger!

Congrats on your first 300! w00t

Congrats Muff. I picked up a nice used 6 module Wiard system about a month ago and its been really incredible. The Wiard System is really amazing. Each module as a small system integrating with each other to form larger systems. All very nicely laid out and they sound sweet across their entire range. Grant rocks.

No coplains at all about my Wiard 300 connectors.
And woow the Omni VCF i still need to get me one.

Damn Muff those are sweet looking. And I presume sweet sounding, in an eelish sort of sweet way. I envy you 4 them. Great pics besides - it's not often these are photographed with such detail. More pics of the backs?

Never had a jack problem in any of my Wiard 300 or 1200 stuff. I've actually never heard anyone complain about the quality of any of Wiards stuff.

Build quality is beautiful and I love the panel mounted pots on the 300. If someone doesn't like their Wiard there is a line of people who will buy it including me.
Norman_Phay
Nice score smile I saw Dave Vosh's advert and figured you'd grab up some of that.

Make sure you try the phasing mode on the Omni VCF ("allpass" mode and "add" on), run a string machine type sound or suchlike thru it, it sounds nice & smooth.

Like the other ppl, I've never had any pronlems whatsoever with the jacks Grant uses. i thought they were switchcraft, actually?
Kwote
+1 more on the wiard jacks. i really like how solid they feel. no cable wriggling around. in fact i'm gonna use them for all my future diy.

Congrats..and big congrats on the Omni..I chickened out on the price of a new one (especially with the dollar is it is).

The waveform city is indeed a wonderous thing..I may need to get myself a second one..but then the classic has the very nice pulse with PWM..and then there is...

Glad you appreciate the physical beauty of them..the modules look good in the light or the dark.
revmutt
Such a great line. I hope Grant releases a few more of his designs in 300 format. I still haven't built a case for mine but one of these days I will pull it from that generic rack that is totally undeserving.

Not having wood skills or space to actually build I am kind of stuck with guess work and then having boards cut by someone else.

Muff if you can get some nice straight on shots when your modules arrive, we can get zip files made up for Rack Planner. I haven't seen any really usable images of Wiard anywhere.

sure! I won't be home 'till late thursday night, but I'll get some more pics (backsides and front) on the weekend

I would be surprised if they have silver or Tin plated contacts.

Muff, are you planning to get more modules? If so, what's next on the list?

chamomileshark wrote:

Yes I have 7 more modules on the way to me

First an envelator that I also am in the middle of buying from Dave

then my 6-module order that I paid for last year with Grant, that he is still building for me and currently estimating 'late summer'

that order is for -

Sequantizer
Classic VCO
Woggle Bug
Dual Borg 1 Filters
Envelator
Mixolator

Following that I will be on the search for 3 modules to fill out the 'second' rack that I've started now with these second hand modules from Dave. I will want to add a Classic VCO, Sequantizer and Envelator to it.

Then I try to get a 'new controller' unit to finish the system off.
chamomileshark
Sounds good. I love the "to finish the system off" bit smile

I'm going to expand mine also, I have 7 modules so a second rack is also beckoning. I guess you have the Boogie in 1200 series like me. Even so I am thinking it will be something I will get in the LP/HP 300 series.

The new controller is wonderful.

can someone pleeeeze do a great 5 min wiard system vid, there is nothing good online.

i have lusted over the wiards for about 5 years but ended up getting a serge and buchla instead...

yeah, I'm quite tempted to simply write off the 300 series as something for collectors, not musicians...

ok, the samples are here. I did them in the first few weeks of getting the system.

Two experimental tracks, I would stress it does "normal" too..as the berlin/Space rock track when I get finished will show.

well, i've mostly been away from home since they arrived, so I've only had a few hours with them

but my thoughts on sound and my overall impressions......

ABSOLUTELY BLOWN AWAY.

bear in mind, I have been dreaming of these things for close to ten years now, to me this occupies that 'mythical system' place where many people put EMS Synthi, Buchla 200, Serge, etc. So I had my expectations set high...

and I'm happy to say, they were exceeded, by a lot.

The Omni Filter - Grant warned me "You've heard this one before, it doesn't have a signature sound", in a way, he is right - it's the classic OTA filter 'sorta' sound we all know.

What is new to me, is the impeccable sound quality - it's a sound I've heard before, but in a clear, present, full way I've never really experienced before. Hard to put your finger on - I hate the term 'audiophile' because to me that is associated with snake-oil, but it's the only way to put it - it is an audiophile grade filter.

But, what I haven't heard before, the thing that MAKES the Omni in my opinion, the best thing about it - the phase shift. OMG, so wonderful. After talking to Grant, I scoped it, and indeed, it's two notches and a peak. And it sounds SO, SO, SO very rich and lush, just unreal. That alone makes the filter just amazing and so unique to me.

The Waveform city - I have to admit I haven't spent a lot of time with the waveform part yet, as I have this same ROM in one of my Blacet MiniWaves

but I've used the VCO part a lot - and I pretty much echo the sentiments above - insane, audiophile VCO. The sawtooth is so powerful with a bit of filtering, and the sines are shaking my windows. I have some nice VCOs to compare it to - the Z3000 is my favorite for raw sound and FM response, the AFG for modulation and animation options, the Blacet for tracking range and workhorse features, and the Zerosc for special tricks and sound FX.

I have to say that the Wiard is now my favorite for raw sound quality, basses, and workhorse features, and I find (based on limited experience) it is on par with the Z3000 for FM, maybe even a hair better. Oh yeah, it's the best of them all for sync.

So this is after a few hours only, and bear in mind it's honeymoon phase so it's difficult not to gush....

also the build construction and the engineering is incomparable to anything I've ever seen. Everything is on headers, nothing is board mounted. Replacing jacks, pots or LEDs will take literally MINUTES. It's all shielded in it's own per-module box. It's all so quiet and RICH sounding, i don't know. I love my small format modular stuff, but this really feels like a different league somehow.

Module #3, a Dual Envelator just hit the mail to me, arriving in a week or two.

The remaining six should come mid to late summer.

I'll make a vid once it's all here, promise
Roycie Roller
Thanks for the descriptions. As you know, i have some modules on order, but it's hard to predict what to expect. I like the part about the VCO section of the WFC being on par at FM with the TipTop. I like to be able to fuck up a sound a lot. I'm looking forwards to the Classic VCO. Plord wrote that it gets real strange really quick.
There's no doubt that they are worth it for the build quality- there's nothing worse than having a new module or whatever else fall apart in your hands after only a few uses.
plord
I will also make vids if I ever get the goddamned thing powered and audible again. Hard to do from NYC. Whine Whine Whine without this job I'd have no Wiard to begin with but srsly WTFOMGBBQ.

Even though they are just audio recordings, when I first heard the 300 series online that's what struck me the most. It's absolutely audible in the recordings that these are much clearer than most other synths without losing it's fullness. "Crisp" is how I would describe what I feel they sound like. I just wish I could play with one in person. Anyone in Chicago showing up to Surachai's meetup with one? hihi
chamomileshark
Hey Muff, do you really have the same ROM on the WC as the Miniwave, on mine they are quite different..I thought they were different on the original WC ROM too (mine has default version 2).
Muff Wiggler
Mine's a WC#3, it has the 'new.256' ROM

I picked up that ROM for my MiniWave Expander when it was built for me a couple years back....
chamomileshark
Now I'm confused..but that's just me..I know there are a number of ROMs that Grant and then John provided.

Is the .256 equivalent to the Miniwave's socket rocket? I was wondering what that was like. I'm planning to get another WC but I can't order for a little while with the state of the £.

People were talking about cancelled orders on another thread..I assume that was for 1200 series. Hoping all is ok with the 300 series..although there will be a wait. Anyone know? yes, I know I should call Grant but I will only call when I've got the money together.
mono-poly
I love to get my hands on that retrosynth rom.

Nope, those are two totally different ROMs.

new.256 is the updated 'replacement' for the Original Waveform City ROM, it contains some of the same material as the original (ie. Bank 2 is the original's Bank 1, however the waveforms have been reordered to morph more smoothly), and some new material that replaced some duplicate or less-useful stuff from the original WC ROM. Basically an 'update' to the original WC ROM.

The original WC ROM has *not* ever been offered by Blacet/Hylander/Matthew Davidson, etc., at least as far as I am aware. The only way to get it was to obtain an original 300 Series Waveform City.

This makes sense, as the new.256 image 'replaces' the original ROM, making it somewhat pointless.

new.256 has been available, from Hylander, for MiniWave users. Additionally if you download the wave.256 software (needed to create your own ROMs), the new.256 content comes with it as functional sample for learning the software with.

Here's all the different ROMs I am familiar with:

- MiniWave 'Original' ROM (Only available with purchase of MiniWave)
- Waveform City 'Original' ROM (Only available with a purchase of original WC)
- new.256
- Socket Rocket
- Scale Quantizer
- Vowels
- Bosch Gardens
- Morphine
- Vector 1
- Vector 2
- GR-PPG/VS
- Retrosynth "MaxiROM"

I have all of these except the 'original' Waveform City ROM, and the RetroSynth MaxiROM.

hope this helps
chamomileshark
ok, thanks. I think I therefore have the new.256 ROM as I recall the notes say something similar.

What's the retrosynth rom about? (I may be getting another miniwave..though I already have another GR-PPG/VS ROM for it)

Do you mean what are the lead times?
You might have better luck than me- my order's taking a while, i think partly because at the moment Grant's focussed on transferring designs to Euro format, plus i imagine he's working on some new designs for Euro as well.
But he did say that once that's out of the way, he'll get back to the 300 series. It might pay to wait til he does, or snag one 2nd hand if you see it (seems to be the quickest way to get 300 series modules).
mono-poly
I think Grant is gonna keep his own format and keep euro for the others.
chamomileshark
I decided a few days back best thing would be to ring Grant. We had a long and wide ranging chat smile
Muff Wiggler
ok i know i said I would follow up with more detailed pics (as requested) and I never really did

well, i've been busy! but also I wanted to wait for my Envelator to arrive

btw, the envelator POOPS ELEGANTLY all over a pair of VCS modules. It's like having two super-VCS units on steroids! and then some....

here's a detail of the jackboard, wiring points on the back to easily create your own normalled connections

Wiard 300 modules are all in a big shielded box - with a big, beautiful circuit board inside, impeccable workmanship. The jackboard and LED daughterboard connect to the main PCB with ribbon connectors and headers - beautiful and simple for maintanance if it's ever required.

All pots are panel/chassis mounted, not board mounted, and they connect to the board with nice big headers - dead simple if we ever need to replace a pot. Worth the extra effort for a module to last a lifetime? HELL YES.

The other thing I was waiting for is a rack adapter unit (thanks Paul!) to mount my modules into.....

love love love

there is so much synth action packed into these three modules that it's pretty much ridiculous. we're not worthy

Congrats. I got 5 (of the 6) modules I ordered very recently, and I have to say, I start tweaking and hours of my life disappear, it's like I'm jacking into an electronic opium den (IN A GOOD WAY).
