CV -> DMX?

So CV/ gate to midi can be real fun, but is there anything that does CV to DMX? I wonder because I often have to do light at work and it's just uninteresting to me. And then I started thinking it might just be fun....

you could do this with an Arduino quite simply, using this guy:
http://arduino.cc/playground/DMX/DMXShield

and sampling the cv inputs on the analog inputs
Kakihara
mmmm... try those guys...

just ordered the midi to dmx recently... probably it's technically possible with CV to midi and then Midi to DMX...

Hmmm, CV To MIDI to DMX. I guess I had somewhat of an impopular idea here. Also, I reckon it would be very difficult to get a nice enough amount of CV inputs. 1 CV is only good enough for 1 lamp. Then we have different colours (LEDpar), different movements for moving heads, intensity and frequency of stroboscopes etcetera...

I guess I just had a bad idea. Thanks for the input, though...

Hi,

Just do a search for "analog to dmx" on google. There are lots out there!
Most analogue lighting control systems use a 0 to +10V control with a few being negative.
There are cards from a few channels up to much larger ones of 48 plus.
I worked in the lighting industry for 25 years or so and we had some handy 96 channel ones made by ETC/ARRI called Connexion Plus, probably crop up second hand sometimes.
These ones are available as a pcb:

Not too expensive for a project perhaps, though most moving heads nead quite a few channels, even a MAC500 needs 12 channels in nasty mode 1 so you would need a lot of sources to make a lightshow do anything much!

I wondered about using a memory console with an analogue output to store CV presets at one time, but the resolution of DMX is only 8 Bit and even then, some desks drop a bit in record and only do 8 bits on fades...

TTFN,
Ben

Oooh that's the cure! Not too expensive and DIY, my favorite kind of electronics.
Thanks, I may try this out anyway...

You planning on selling any?
What channels are you using?
How many channels can you use?
Great work!

Excellent, and thanks guys for the other links! I will be spending some money on some of these for Christmas!

Old topic but... while it's not converting CV to DMX directly, if you have MIDI conversion first you can do this. As cheap as it gets and dead simple to build -

MIDI2DMX
The straight to the facts version:

The friendlier Instructables version:

Thanks Mos! Great stuff gonna build myself a few of those.
