plague bearer gain knob, doing... nothing?

Post by nooneimportant » Sun Apr 01, 2012 2:09 pm

How subtle is the gain knob? No matter how I patch the plague bearer, I can't hear it doing anything. Maybe I'm confused about its function? :help:

Yeah that doesn't really do anything... I can post a video if that'd help, but really I hear no change.

I've got version 4, it's less than a week out of the box.

EDIT: ok i'm getting a bit of a response out of it, perhaps I'm just not giving myself enough time to learn this module? It's still pretty darn subtle, but I'm also not feeding it anything terribly complicated.

hmm that's weird.

on mine running audio through it turning the high all the way and turning the gain all the up is really noticable..

where do you have the input level at? i normally keep mine at 12 o'clock

ok did some tests.

first is a my uflo playing some rene ditty that i'm so tried of listening to now :omg:

after the pause is my plague bearer ver4 with all knobs at 12 o'clock or close enough.

after the next pause you hear the gain being cv'd by my vulcan modulator's max out.

the gain input is only looking for positive voltages. good to know

I am also having the same issue with a plague bearer two weeks out of the box- And this is the second one! (i exchanged the first because the "high" knob was having the same problem...)
When I send CV to the gain input, I hear what I assume is the full range, but when I turn the knob, I can hear almost no difference, and what little
I can perceive I have to listen awfully hard for.
The weirdest part is, that I could swear it was working fine until yesterday.
Should the knob have the same range of effect as the CV input??

Ok, sorry for all these posts.
I finally read the manual and found this:
"Making Noise
The PB filter can also act as a noise generator, and quite a variable
one at that. To do so, just turn the input all the way down (CCW), turn
the gain up a bit, and then adjust the High and Low controls to get the
desired tone of noise. You can get some interesting percussion sounds by
applying an impulse or saw wave to the High CV input, or some nice wind/
whooshing sounds with a slow sweep. Daisy-chaining (series-connecting) a
couple filters makes some nicely creepy ambient effects.
Caveat: The noise feature is very quiet! I'm talking millivolts here. It
works, trust me, that is the first and last function I test before shipping. If you
can't hear any noise, crank up your output amplifier. If you still can't hear it,
use a preamp as well. It is worth it!"

and cranking my vca/mixer, I can hear exactly what is described, and the gain knob seems to work fine with these settings.
User ineptitude. Case closed.
Off to explore! :nana:

I usually find that running the input signal too hot will make the PB (r4 in my case) "less responsive", sometimes leading to the knobs "doing nothing". Try to back down the signal (with the attenuator switch and input trim) to where it's just audible, then turn gain. 10-11 o'clock usually sounds sweet and gnarly.

Yeah, I was mainly confused because whatever the settings, cv'ing
the gain knob gives me a much wider range.
for instance, putting a square wave into the gain cv goes from
Gnarly to dead-silent, whereas no matter what the settings, the gain knob
turned manually never results in silence.
should the gain knob fully ccw result in silence?
whatever the case, it sounds great!

I generally find that I get the most out of my rev 3.3 PB by having the input very attenuated, like at 9oclock or less. At that setting, the rest of the knobs have a much more dramatic effect.
