The original Mullard TAB101 is indeed made from germanium transistors. Many of the TAB101s that you can buy from Ebay and other sources appear not to be - which suggests they are fakes or that the TAB101 was remade with silicon at a later date. I'm guessing the former as the construction of two devices I have seen was pretty dodgy - air bubbles in the epoxy seal, crappy brittle steel legs and with no solder tinning.

However, I have tested two obvious fakes and they do seem to work as ring modulators. I know of one chap who has compared the fake TABs to the real thing and he says they sound very similar if not the same.

I try to summarize most of the info about the panel.

This is the end result after the comments (low quality pic):

This is an example from the same factory to get an idea of the quality, panel will look like this only with alu and black graphics like the orginal synthi panel.

Some things to keep in mind before ordering !!
This panel its designed for use with:
-the original meter (mounting hole is 46mm) Shinohara meter
-the original joystick (mounting hole is 40mm) http://www.superdroidrobots.com/shop/it ... temid=1265
If you don’t have these maybe you can find something that fit the mounting hole or also search for the originals (ebay ?)
-Philmore Vernier dials (ebay ?)
-ghielmetti 621 type 20x20 patchmatrix (still available at ghielmetti but expensive)

Other components used for this panel are pretty basic (cliff knobs, cliff jacks, 16mm alpha pots, etc) still available at musikding, banzaieffects, digikey/mouser, ebay,...
I will give a list with links where I ordered the basic stuff and what parts are used to peoople who ordering.

About the case
This panel can be used with a diy plywood case covered in tolex with removable lid, like I did here to get an idea:
Image
I will send technical drawings for the woodwork to people who want to go this way or you can build your own case.
On this moment I have orders for of about 10 panels

People who still want to join the groupbuy for this panel can still PM me...

Production will start in a week or two this will be a ONE-OFF groupbuy so it's now or never :)

I have a question about the matrix...
I'm on the list for a couple but wonder if anything was ever decided about pins to suit, is it a case of everyone for themselves or would it make sense to bundle, say 20 pins with a matrix (obviously, to be paid for).
Could there be a pricing advantage to a single order of, maybe, 400 pins rather than 20 tiny orders?

Aside from the Hornets and Derek's own builds, have any Phutney's been completed?

I've loosely followed this project over the years (this thread goes back to 2012!) and I haven't seen much progress in the way of DIY completed synthis. I've noted many people selling off their parts over the years. I'm curious what the barriers are at this point. Is it the expense or difficulty in procuring the correct matrix? Is it the up until recently, lack of existing panels/enclosures? Are there other hidden issues I am not recognizing?

It was this for me. I've populated the boards and tested the power supply is ok, but didn't really fancy wiring everything up without a panel and hardware in place.

in my case:
due to expensive costs of the parts specially very rare/rare Trannys, matrix, panel, pcbs (around 1500€) i sourced in last 1,5 years all parts, pcb assembly was finished, i´m still wait for the panel from the muffs groupbuy and have to build a case and attach a powersupply, start the massive wiring job.
its a longtime project for me and for 2 friends of me too.
its very time intensive too - to find and order all parts.

the parts is the time consuming bit

but you can use the lm394 or the ls318 as the transistor pairs in the oscillators tried and tested and they can be gotten cheaply erica synths does the 394 in metal can and dip

and micross uk has the ls318

i built up a crowbx voice card and tried both the lm394 and the s318 and both worked no difference in functionality or sound as its only used in the expo

most of the parts you can get cheaply but the exotic stuff is expensive the verniers cost a bit and the matrix panel if you buy your self singly is also expensive

but if you want one diy is really the only way second hand prices are above 6k new ones are also 6k but the waiting time is massive

the panel is what is the hardest thing to get but recently there have been

3 panels available
