The Banana feedback experiment thread

Post by nrdvrgr » Sun Nov 04, 2012 5:50 am

Been enjoying my Audio Matrix Mixer a lot lately (thanks Bakis)... feedback loops in the Serge is so fun and unpredictable. So why not collect a few feedback experiments in one thread? (Feel free to add your own audio/video of sonic mayhem!)

I´ll go first:

I've posted this before but saying as how you were asking for feedback stuff the Res Eq is a beast for that.

Awesome idea for a thread! Great clips so far.

Can you please describe your patch a little bit? In which ways do you find the matrix mixer to be useful for feedback patches?

Can´t remember the details, but the following modules were involved; Gator, Quadslope, Varslope filter, WAD, FS.
I just patch up as many ins and outs as possible in the matrix and go to work. It is just a matter of experimentation. What fascinates me is the possible variations of a single patch that can be seemingly endless, all depending on how you tweak the matrix.

The banana format lends itself so well to feedback experimentation as it's so much easier to patch up an out > in < out > in feedback patch on most of the modules. Certainly on the Serge things such as the Res Eq, WAD, Wave Multipliers to name but 3 are perfect for this kind of exploration.

Another synth that is wonderful for feedback is the VCS3 with it's patchboard. I often feedback the Ring Mod back through itself or indeed the filter as well for no VCO patches.

The trouble is sometimes taming all this wildness into a meaningful musical composition. Earlier in the year I released a sample library using lots of these feedback techniques. Here's a demo track from there with the VCS3 featuring prominently in the eerie gliss like sounds heard in the first half.

ResEQ and WAD in feedback as sole sound sources (part 3 is my favorite):

Some more experiments with the feedback machine : beside the semi-random SSG sequencing, only the ResEQ (patched in feedback) + WAD are tweaked and provide radical changes to the sound :

Great thread. I'm gonna have to toss something in. I love making self-generating patches on the serge - waves crashing against waves...

Now we´re talking - as I hoped this thread is shaping up nicely with a lot more than just Serge. Thanks for all great contributions, and keep them coming! I have been away from the studio a few days, but I hope to get patching towards the end of the week.

Cool thread!!! Image
I admit I do not use much feedback anymore since I have more gear, but it was a main part when I started with electronics/industrial. Mostly mics... Pedals...

Nevertheless I still like very much to take one OUT of the WAD and plug it in one IN (like in the patch seen in my last posted Sere vid). And feedback is such an old habit, that I might even use it unconsciously pretty often!

Anyway, it's good to see/hear all friends here participating. So thank you all for sharing! Image
And thanx a lot Henrik for this cool initiative.

Audio Matrix Mixer is predestined for this kind of manipulations. Cool you add it to your powerful set. Image
Great journey!!!

What a *&/!"%* bestiary you had here!!!

I remember Seb vids here with Res Eq and it really looks like a good candidat for feedback abuses... Indeed...

The more I listen to the WAD, the more I'm convinced it enjoys being maltreated!

Very different kind of sounds. I liked it very much too!

Liked all. Prefer as well (or of course) part 3.
Many indus projects coming back to memory while listening to it!!!
Here in german we say: GEIL!

I love the AMM! Unfortunately I just had to sell mine.

This is a recording of a patch I made using the AMM, Blue Voice, and CV2. Outputs of the MM are fed to the two Dual VCAs, which are controlled with two DSGs that are also cross modding each other. Algorithm soup!

Wonderful ambience... almost trancelike feeling. A very different approach to feedback!

You really think this would go without me :-).

This is my all time favorite brand new feedback patch fresh fresh.
Simple Simple.

Frequency Shifter ---> Attenuator ---> Wave Folder (middle section of the Wave Multipliers) ---> Frequency Shifter

The sound is coming form the FS and wave multiplayer paned left and right most of the time.

In the patch example I have added the WAD (Delay) and 2 more sounds.

I wish you a good night

Rastko
