Curious, why are VCA and Level pointing at Freq since they actually control incoming audio? Shouldn't they loint towards LR input?

Not an issue, just curious about your thoughts when designing. I'll probably end up with both panels!

Taking some artistic license with the design, I guess... the panels are intended to be legible but not necessarily didactic. No substitute for RTFM, in other words. The original layouts set certain constraints as well.

is this the official Grayscale panel thread?

Post by bentoncbainbridge » Sat Jun 15, 2019 11:02 pm

hi Wes, I love the clean look of this rack! https://www.modulargrid.net/e/racks/view/21088

Is this the thread to ask general questions about Grayscale panels?

Do you make 4ms Row Power 40 in plain silver? Can I order one or two?

Also, I'm curious if you ever did Mungo w0 and s0, or just the d0 and g0?

cheers, thanks!

Hey, thanks. I have a Row Power template that I can send you to order your own from Front Panel Express, I'll send you a message with details.

Only did the d0 and g0.

Also: the black QPAS panels will be here in a few days, aluminum is going to take a bit longer as I'm considering a new supplier for aluminum panels and I'm waiting on samples before ordering a larger batch.

If you're referring to the Cycle switches, it's probably the C&K D6R or something similar.

Hello! Can you send me the row power information? I built the case a couple of grayscale panels, couldn't hurt to have one more!

Thanks.

I usually wait a few months, I need to actually get my hands on those modules so I can scan the original panels and check out the mechanical details.

If anyone's got an X-PAN I would like to get a scan of the panel and get this one started. Already got the Mimeophon ready to go.

That was immediately what went through my head.
I thought it was a bit "out of character" as I always thought all the replacement panels were so super well thought out. And that at least part of the idea was to bring a transparency to the layouts, and indeed, increase the user understanding of the interface design/functionality...

Always nice to have options though!

It just looked too unbalanced without the extra lines. Alt panels aren't like a set of training wheels, you've still got to know how to ride the bike...

Just got an X-PAN, will be posting Mimeophon and X-PAN preorders soon.

I don't mean my comment as an "attack" or "criticism"... more an opportunity to offer feedback or just talk about this as an area of consideration for interface design. I am an artist and designer myself, so these things matter to me.

Totally understand the need to read the manual and all, but that is a separate issue. The device itself should always offer the optimum of information that reflects it's function. I always appreciated your work with the alt panels, because from my perspective you were addressing a lot of situations where that was NOT happening, and your designs were indeed increasing that legibility. Which I appreciated, and still do.

Furthermore, I would imagine that when designing a "system" with multiple devices, one establishes certain visual language that increases the legibility of the whole environment. Which means that if one thing is labeled certain way on one device, it should be marked in a similar way on another device. This helps the user understand and learn the logic of the whole system. But if that is not done consistently, then the design actively confuses the user rather than helping them. And I think you have been really good at maintaining that consistency throughout the many panels you designed.

Thank you for all that, and keep up the good work!
