Anyone have a picture of a Grayscale paneled Phonogene in the wild?

Sure, here are a few user pics from over the years:

I sold out of these a while back but Analogue Haven still has some.

Nice, looking forward to the Mimeophone one.

My dream is that you'll eventually do a Rampage panel and perhaps a Natural Gate. Those are the last black/alt colored panels left in my main system, and they drive my OCD nuts. I even love the Natural Gate's design, but I just want aluminum. :despair:

Thanks for the requests. Those sound like good candidates for one-offs, PM me if you want to discuss further.

Preorders for Mimeophon and X-Pan are open:

https://grayscale.info/panels/make-nois ... -aluminum/
https://grayscale.info/panels/make-nois ... hon-black/
https://grayscale.info/panels/make-noise-xpan-aluminum/
https://grayscale.info/panels/make-noise-xpan-black/

I'll take preorders until the end of December, order panels in early January contingent on preorder totals, and ship later in January. This will most likely be a one-time run so get 'em while you can.

Here's the Mimeophon design:

Why did you cover the LEDs in the
silver version?

Both LEDs are the surface-mount type.

On the black alt panel (as on the original Mimeo panel) the LEDs can shine through the translucent PCB material if the copper and soldermask layers are punched out.

This isn't possible with aluminum so instead there are plastic light pipes (like the ones used on the 4ms SMR for example) to channel the light to the front.

Is the black PCB a fairly close match in shade to the default black panels?

For example, I have a black mimeophon that I'm happy with, but I have a silver Maths that I'd be interested in getting a dark panel for.

Would your dark panel Maths match (relatively closely) with Make Noises stock Mimeophon panel?

They are quite similar, there's always a little variation between batches, even from the same fab, but here's an original X-Pan panel alongside a Maths alt panel:

I don't own any of their modules but AS seems to have some of the most legible and inoffensive panel designs around... what would be the goal there? Black panels?

I intend to keep up with new Make Noise releases but otherwise I'm not doing much else on the alt panel side of things lately.

The old modules lettering scratch/remove very easily and drilled panels holes aren't consistent with the predominate eurorack format. Take a look at their newer panels with improved lettering and panel holes for either their proprietary racks or other. Black panels aren't necessary.

I stumbled on this pic of old MS-20 with a Japanese overlay, I remember I saw a white color version of the Japanese overlay before somewhere too, and it’s reminds me of Grayscale.

Image

I wonder if Grayscale (or anyone else) ever made (thought about) something like this...
If not maybe someone can make something that people can print by themself at home. I know for eurorack it would be problem since people arranged their modules placement differently, but probably would work for a complete system like the MN Shared System, though I think separated overlay for each module is not a hassle and we just need to tighten it with the bolts/knurlies if needed.

I think it would be cheaper/easier/faster way to simplified complicated imagery for some people.

The black Mimeo/XPan panels are here, I'll be shipping preorders within the next day or two.

The gray ones will be shipping in mid-February, somewhat later than expected.

A company called Oversynth is making some overlays like this: https://oversynth.com

Not specifically focused on modular gear (though some of the synths like the Mother 32 are "modules" too).

Maybe they'd do something custom for you.
