New blog on large format synths
MUFF WIGGLER Forum Index -> 5U Format Modules
Author New blog on large format synths

So I started a blog about large format synths. http://www.bigmodularsynth.com/

What that means is I'm going to be featuring my and other users experience with putting together, playing and designing large format modulars. So check it out and even more importantly if you have anything to share, let me know. I'm looking for people who've done film scores, made albums, built modules and absolute noobs to veterans to feature. If I feature you'll I'll ask for high quality imagery and videos when possible of the system in action.

And if you're a musician touring with a 5u system, even just for one show somewhere else, I'm super interested in talking to you. Basically anything of interest, pass it along if you like. thanks!

I've gotten so much from other people in this community and I feel like it'd be great to create a place where this format is shown in it's many permutations. There's so much info about euro and not enough about our big jacks n knobs.

Sounds like a good time!

Very nice layout, and already a diy tip on how to solder well!

Your blog has some beautiful photos and is very well designed! Looking forward to continuing entries and seeing how it all develops. Nice to see someone dedicated to the 5U format doing such a thing as I sometimes feel like we're not as well represented in the overall modular zeitgeist since our format is not as portable as (for example) Euro stuff.

A good idea for a post would be to talk about the way the power is handled by the different "5U" synthesizer companies.
MOTM has 2 different connectors, one for +5 and one without.
Modcan has no +5 available, and a 3 pin connector.
Synthesizers.com has 1 connector and it has +5.

I think COTK and Moon have different power connectors.

I think the original Moog modular ran on +-12.

There might be more information on the subject of power to be covered as well.

Very cool looking blog! Keep it going please!

Here is the post I was looking for:

That explains a few things.

Thanks for the ideas, guys! keep em coming and I'll add stuff as I go! I spend a lot of time reading about synths and really probably put 3-5 hours a day on my synth (I have a girlfriend who travels a ton for work and friends who like to jam a ton) so it's really a massive part of my life at this point. Thanks for all the support.

Moon Modular has the same connector and voltage as CoTK, and sometimes they have a Dotcom connector as well.

Pin spacing would be a good idea for the Dotcom and MOTM (not sure about the others). MOTM would be MTA .156 and Dotcom is .100 (I think haha). The graphic there shows those both the same and they are not.

It might be handy to have a roll your own power cable post. I have saved hundreds by doing that and only had one fail so far. It would be handy to have MTA part numbers and cable numbers to order the things you would need. The Dotcom site has that info posted online.

Great idea Bryan.

I've made all my power connectors personally and use the STG distro board. The only issue I've had with making power connectors was making them while drinking whiskey with STG and accidentally wiring 2 of them exactly backwards. It didn't fry anything but my power supply did puff a little black smoke at me. I was sure I messed up my whole system, but apparently these power one supplies are built like tanks and it didn't bat an eye once I fixed my dumb error.

Guinness ftw! Guinness ftw!

Great site! Bookmarked smile

looks good! I'm a noob who has spent the last year learning about modulars and diy and have been slowly building my own 5u banana system. I'm beginning to make some progress and could contribute a post about it in about a month or so. I plan to gig quite regularly with my system.

I'd love to see process photos etc of your build so keep me posted!

There's a new post up with an elaborate breakdown of a complex and tweaky sequenced dance track for anyone who's interested. http://www.bigmodularsynth.com/tweaky-sequence-patching-breakdown/

and here's the video of the patch.
