Author Demo Video of Nyle Steiner's 24 Vactrol String Filter

I learned recently of a sweepable 24 stage vactrol filter Nyle Steiner designed. He said he built about 12.

He found the one he has and plugged it in for the first time 15 years and we had a listen. It's just beautiful.

I told him I could find no information on line or even photos etc. of it and he let me borrow it to do a demo recording. This video is my demo of the device.

It was made to make violin/string sounds using it as a static filter with 24 band pass stages, but also can do some amazing effects with the stages being swept using 24 separate vactrols.

It's a pretty long, overproduced demo but I really wanted to capture a lot of aspects of this amazing filter. I played an A6 Andromeda, Steiner EVI, white noise, and also played a bovine acoustic simulation device into it (by popular request).

Wow - an all Steiner Mishpuchuh Production! Loved the Doina on the Steiner EVI. So can we get a digital simulacra of the Bovine Non-cadmium replicator and the filter in Reactor?

Sounds amazing ! zombie
Thanks for doing & sharing the demo.

The filtered saw made me literally queasy in my stomach.
Is someone building these again?

That is friggin' amazing sound! Is this being made again (besides the doepfer clone)? Is there anything out there that sounds similar?

Thank you! I think Nyle actually did already do the filter in Reactor.... I will ask him about it.

As far as the bovine unit, I'm interested in seeing it made as a controller with CV out. Crowds would rush the stage.

I think maybe it'll be out there in time.

The second I found out about this device I hoped find a way to help get it out there as a module. That's one of the main reasons I did the demo. Nyle does show interest in that and we are talking about directions to go right now with it.

Steiner EVI's have a static string filter in them already usually.

The Akai EVI/EWI sound modules in the first production (called the EWV2000) also had a static string filter with external input... so if you can find that module, even without the wind controller, you could use that filter and even manually sweep the onboard low pass filter that follows. That static string filter is an 18 stage version, but it still sounds very good and is analog. Knew a guy when I was in Korea who would run beats through one with great effect.

I see EWV2000's on ebay from time to time.

We'll see how it goes though... I hope it happens. It's a neat device and would be cool to see available static and/or sweepable module. I'm also suggesting putting CV in on the sweep.

There are some master synthesists out there and here on the forum who would do magic with this thing.

Truly sounds amazing. I need that filter!

That + E350 = something wonderful

After your post, in my home we are now using queasy as a term of excellence... "That is so cool" = "That is so sick" now = "That is queasy, dude."

if/when this is resurrected my vote definitely goes with making it sweepable. thumbs up

Here's the singing alien song from the video's end credits on sound cloud. It's all A6 Andromeda through the Steiner String Filter. Downloadable if you want the resolution.

Ha, glad I started something!
I hope you get it out as module, I would open another case for that.

I still didn't understand from all of this discussion, if there's an intention to remake this filter or not.
If it was available - i would definetly buy one.

Loved the video, great sounds and playing too.

Don't understand a word of that post. You lost me at Mishpuchuh...

agreed

Nice though that thing sounds, I was more blown away by the amazing EVI playing on that, where can I check out some more of your music?

Although I promised myself a moratorium on buying more DIY projects, I would be VERY interested in a PCB of this to build, as long as it's multi-format.

It's possible it will be remade. Right now just in the early stages of discussion with Nyle on doing so. I really hope it happens.

Thank you so much for the kind words (from you and others, thank you!). There is a little of my stuff at Soundcoud here. Though much of that demo type things.

I'm most excited about my current project in the works, which is my classical synthesis version of Respighi's "The Pines of Rome" along with my own similarly toned compositions. I'll be puting it out in pieces as I do it at www.thepinesofmars.com. There is a track list and more info there.

Neat. Lots of vactrols!

Been listening to that youtube several times.
It really sounds good. But at the same time i'm begining to feel it has a lot in common - soundwise - with a regular Flanger effect, don't you think?

It sure does have a lot in common and functions similarly. Like a flanger or phaser, this array of band pass filters is enhancing certain areas and canceling (or denying) others. Phasers are the same but the "teeth" in the comb filter made don't stay uniform across the spectrum with changes in the source. So this is a little more like a phaser but same kind of thing.

One thing that makes this one cool is that it has 24 discreet areas of enhancement with silence or lower mixes between. Also their static placement is mathematically set right in place in a way that physically models the resonating body of a "wood and glue" body of a violin or other string instrument. This is the part I like most, and I haven't played through a flanger or phaser that comes anywhere near sounding violin like as this. If I understand right, the phasers we hear typically have more like 4 or 5 stages instead of 24.

I'm not all that much of a specialist on this all, but this is my understanding of it. Others out there should correct me or clarify if I am off on it... but this is what I understand about it...

This unit can dial down to lower numbers of stages and it does sound more and more like a standard phaser.

All that said, I love the sound of a great standard flanger/phaser for sure.

Another thing to it is that Nyle really just has a way, even with standard filter types, of designing circuits that just plain sound nice.

When Nyle finished developing the static version of this filter, he called up his brother (who is an excellent violinist) and said, "you gotta come hear my new string filter... you can just smell the rosin!"

Sounds fantastic to my ears. Thanks for the demo. beer!

Vactrols, Alesis Andromeda, Alien Cows, and Zombocom in the same video...

wow, thats cool stuff to hear, have to move my EWV out front and run an effect send to it! Is there more info out there about this feature?
im gonna go snooping, but thanks for pointing this out!
Also, could you schedule me a EWI repair with The Man?
wink neat news, keep up the good work!
