Author Max4Live device favorites?
shady smiles
Hey all,

I'm starting to dabble (again) with Max4Live and am keen for pointers to current favorite devices.

So far I've been digging into Robert Henke's Granulator and Pluggo a bit too.

Any others?

Thanks in advance!

(FWIW I'm using Ableton 9)
ignatius
the lemubara stuff is great though i'm not sure they are live9 friendly yet.

http://www.maxforlive.com/library/index.php?by=author&q=animatek

http://www.maxforlive.com/index.php

also, K devices, design the media are both really great..

http://k-devices.com/

http://designthemedia.com/files/category/1-max-for-live/

christian kleine stuff is good too

http://www.christiankleine.com/ck/maxforlive.html

and if you decide you need more granular stuff.. check density m4l device.. he makes stuff for ipad and iOS but has m4l devices as well.

Thanks for the pointers.

EXT looks especially powerful. Peeking at the Christian Kleine stuff now.

Cheers!

Rozzer Advanced Step Sequencer—Fantastic sequencer that is suitable for acid lines and more complicated stuff. Easy to create variations of patterns.

Sting!—Creates an endless supply of random acid basslines. Very fun.

Point Blank Riser—Synth that creates white noise buildups and other stuff. Pretty useful.

Mapulator—Control multiple knobs with one knob and allow for complicated curve mappings. Maybe the most useful M4L device I have come across.

I have about a dozen of my own that I use regularly which I really need to release soon.

I like beat fader a lot there was also a reverse effect I was keen on

When I get on my real computer I will post some links

Mostly I liked taking other peoples m4l patches and adding LFOs to all the control knobs, for inbuilt modulations.

I also made a touch osc layout in maxmsp for Aalto (which includes some controls of my own devising) that should be easy enough to port to m4l if people were interested.

Is there something like the Addac 601 VC Filterbank? I've seen plug-ins that sort of do the same thing, but a m4l device could be handy. I'm so new to the live 9 suite, a filterbank is probably included in there.

Although unless Abelton hurry up with a CRAZY summer sale - looks like Im stuck on 8 for a while longer and I have a feeling lots of stuff will require 9.

Hyakken's stuff is amazing

Christian Klein's Max for Cats: Chord Memorizer and Chord Transposer are used every track

Opfour Tx81z clone is great sounding, very authentic sound to TX81z

Other used stuff all the time include following sequencers: ML-185, Rozzer, Mono sequencer, Hyakken's sequencers

This is amazing. Some sync issues but I'm hopeful they will be ironed out. I love Grids but I like software for drums (and give Mutable my money for other stuff).

funny when i was discussing grids oliver was sure there was a software equivilent to grids which there kinda is but not really and why I wanted grids. Now I can forgo grids and use this via silent way and grab another Peaks or Tides - I call that a triple win

The sync issues where caused by Max's Javascript.

ey wiggelors,
here are some patches i use a lot or specifically for their quality:

sometimes the basics are overlooked:

- max overdrive (simple but great)

- max ringmoddual (on drums and percussions modulated with an lfo, together with the overdrive)

- the lfo_one by robert henke (gold)

- max envelope follower (in combination the Silent Way DC, gold)

- the Fader live (can do what utility should do actually, fade to 0db)

- jo.oscilloscope1 (does its job well enough, trigger mode works well in most cases, not so good for analyzing lfo´s though)

so now the fancy stuff:

first things first
- the granulator (it has been mentioned few times, but i can´t stress enough what a gift this is. thanks robert henke. we're not worthy )

- convolution reverb pro (if you haven't tried yet, try to drop some weird samples as IR´s - sometimes boring, sometimes magic)

-polyrhytmus (very unique modular, euclidean sequencer, arpeggio-builder and a lot more... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xTgSgTGoBLc)

-ml.px-18 (great sequencer, also from robert henke)

-architect (complex lfo generator, in general the modulators make every assignable instrument so much more powerful, ridiculesly and this one does very good job at that)

-ck.kat.grainfield (granular synthesis based audio-fx, gold)

-grainfreeze (more from robert, you see i´m into granular synthesis)

-black (i´ve seen it been mentioned, but i wanted to say robert henke did it another time. you don´t need the device, but it IS productive to listen in another visual context. close your eyes, watch an aesthetically pleasing video-clip or take a look at your girl/boy/cat while listening to what you´ve been doing for the last hours - this idea is as simple as 4:33 and for us computer musicians just as important)
i want to add that i heard people watch tape machines roll or records spin while listening to their mix. i tried it. it is a nice experiment, maybe a youtube video does the trick too for you.
...perception

Is there a midi to cv to use with the ES-3?

The rene device is really good
Black Medicine
The zb.random pass, and ONE knob are quite useful. Granulator 2, and of course, Convolution Reverb Pro, especially with things other than reverb impulses loaded into it. Put two or three of those in a row, and drag and drop pads or whatever in there, then put whatever you want through them, look out. Strange and wonderful things can happen. Hell, record the output of the reverbs, and drop them into Granulator.

Also Henke's Formant Filters and Drum plugin are fantastic. Robert's just a genius, in addition to being a fucking cool person, and truly a master musician. Pretty much any talk he gives is worth watching.
Black Medicine
Also, the Skinnerbox Time is a pretty amazing tool, though you have to run Max 6 for it because the current color scheme issues with Max 7 make it nearly unusable.

you can definitely do this in max and there's probably a few different things in the max4live database that can get to some approximation of what you are after. but i can't link to specifics.. just have a search or browse on the max4live database. also look into what's already included w/maxforlive. it comes w/a shit ton of devices and starting points for making your own things.

Checkout Grainface and Scrub Face

http://www.maxology.club/starter-kit-info/2015/7/29/starter-kit-2-perc olate

Grainface uses munger~ which might be my favorite 'all time' singular granular object. Although I'm working on something that will hopefully be better in gen~

Another classic that I think is well executed is a project called "The Mill" that uses poly~, that a guy did back in the Max4 days, but it drastically needs an update to Max7.

Well, Oscillot has it all. wink LFOs, envelopes, randomizers, sequencers and whatnot. There's a free version available, but for envelopes it only supports an AD envelope. If a simple envelope is all you need, you could also build one yourself, using Max' adsr~ object or put something together via Max 7's built-in Beap modules.

With oscillot - if it sits in an ableton channel, you're limited to routing right? Ie it'll be limited to stereo?

If you want to send more than 2 channels of CV from a single instance of Oscillot, there's an 'audio send' module and an 'audio receive' device (included in the full version only). This allows to route audio to 4 additional stereo buses, giving you a total of 10 mono outs. Thus, you could e.g. use 8 channels for CV via the ES-3 and have two more channels for plain audio signals via your soundcard, e.g. to feed things like digital oscillators, noise generators, sample playback, etc. from Oscillot into your modular.

This reminds me that I wanted to make a tutorial video about this. d'oh!

Thanks for this.... that's convinced me enough.

If this helps anyone else out - the 8 outs can be assigned in stereo pairs or mon to other ableton channels if you select "audio from" oscillot in an ableton channel and select a required ADAT to "audio to"....you have to assign the separate "oscillot audio receiver" m4l device (found in max audio effects) as an insert and select what audio out channels you want to recieve from oscillot.

I'm assuming it's different from reaktor then, as running it as a plug in ableton means i can only send 2 cv outs and assign ableton's channel out to a ADAT via an ES-3?

If i understand what you're saying correctly, you might simply not be aware of a routing option in ableton live. Say you have an track with a vst-plugin that's capable of producing audio on several outputs (e.g. 6). With the routing options of that track, you can only send audio to at most two outputs, as you said. But if you create another audio track, you can tell the new track to use the vst-track as an input and can then specify which outputs of the vst-track to use. You can then route that audio to another pair of outputs. You can repeat this process until you're using all audio outputs of the vst.

It's not as easy as drawing a wire, but it works.

So how do you send triggers in from eurorack to oscillot? Is this limited to 2 inputs L and R?
mwvm
https://www.instagram.com/p/BAaWRyxo0FF/

The whole patch was driven by oscillot via a ES-3 (S & H, sequencers and LFO) and audio outs (triggers) a motu 828x

The probability logic is particularly great for oscillot. I used 4 sample and holds with noise inputs triggered by these gates.

The bass drum is a Bf22 self oscillating and snare a A118 via a Bf22.

We need 16 outs!! And I need another ES-3.

While this is an application written in Max, you can bridge it to Ableton using Soundflower, and it's pretty fun.

I use it a lot too. Haven't done any mods - enough parameters already to tweak - add a few LFOs for good measure.

I really like this sequencer - it's a Euclidean one, but implemented in an intuitive way that really suits drums. Stick one of these in front of a drum rack, with maybe an LFO or two, and it's fun all day. This is fun!

Does is potentially save any or all parameters on any or all

I'm looking for a very simple Max for Live device: a knob/slider that simply sends out cv. I want to use it automating specific parameters in my modular with my Expert Sleepers EX8. Does anyone know if this simple device exists ?(have tried searching the MFL device database without any luck).

Create a live.dial, set the attributes such that it generates values between 0 and 1 (range = 0. 1.), connect it to a sig~ and then sent it to the plugin output. Add the knob to the presentation. Done. It's so simple i'm not sure if needs to exist. I could send it to you if you're having trouble with it. But really, it's so easy it could be a nice way to make your first little max for live device.

Yes, his devices are very well programmed.
I got the J74 Progessive also(chord generator), but it doesnt get much use. Its very deep as you said. Works well with the J74 Bassline, basically the Bassline can follow the Chords root note.

But overall, I dont use J74 progressive. Idk why, guess I like my tracks not too clinical/static sounding. An off note here and there is what I prefer after all.

J74 progressive is pretty good for learning music theory though. But yeah, I would definitely recommend the J74 bassline.

I've been using MidiVolve lately. Nice pattern sequencer, but at the same time also capable of importing midi clips or inputting notes directly into the sequencer. Reminds me of Numerology with it's chance capabilities and evolving mechanism.

Edit: In live 9 I've not found a way to send MIDI CC directly to a synth or a old plugin. ControlChange8 supports this though.

I got this on a whim when it came out (half off!) and really love it. Some of the effects are pretty basic, but the "Reduktor" plugin is a nice step up from the native Ableton bit crusher in that it has a wet/dry mix and the post-effect filter to take out some of the harmonics.

I recently downloaded CK's "Tide II" synth on a whim, and it's probably my favorite discovery for non-standard synth noises, because it can really sound like nothing else. I just wish it didn't have to chew up so much CPU. In the unlikely event that I secure some free time, I may just tweak the Tide II and the M4L "More Simpler" to be a little more tailored for my needs.

Anyone have any good recommendations on other noisy or not-super-tonal M4L effects/synths? Max plugins have recently become a go-to for me when it comes to things that don't sound like every other EDM-abused plugin. I've pretty much given up on most softsynth plugins lately because so many of them have such a nasty EDM vibe about their sound.

Yep, this is my biggest beef with Ableton. It's unbelievable that they STILL don't have that functionality built in (and no MIDI instrument definitions either) even with Push 2 and Live 10.

What adds insult to injury confused is that using a Max device to do it means that the automation data created with the device is not saved as MIDI CC data in the clip. If you import that clip into another project , that automation data is not included.

Also, all the Max devices I have tried for this job did not play too well with the Push. If you want to name the knobs and not have unwanted controls showing up on the Push display you have to map Macro knobs to control the Max knobs. And still there is no way to hide selected devices from Push very frustrating
Maschine has all that shit well covered.

I'm a M4L developer and just released this device which I find super helpful if you're doing performance stuff. Check it out. 100% free wink

Here's what it does.
Say I've got a SPDX, or some kind of midi controller that just puts out a fixed set of midi messages (C1-C2 or something). I want to use this device for an entire set of music, and use another midi controller or keyboard to switch songs. Typically, I would do this with chains, where each chain would have a different drum rack containing all the sounds I want for a different song. This is great, but if I want some of those sounds to loop, or have follow actions, or any of that cool shit that Ableton clips do, I'm SOL.
This devices solves that problem by mapping a fixed set of midi notes to Ableton clips. Each chain can have a unique clip slot that it triggers. This means that you can send a note (say C1) and it will trigger clip slot 0, then change chains, send C1, and then trigger clips slot 1. Yay! Song changed & you can use clips

Its for free! Love the playability of it, you can use it on melody of course but also gives really jazzy and natural results on Drums aswell. Reminds of MI Marbles

"Generate random MIDI note messages with adjustable probability and randomised length and velocity for each note. Includes two probability modes, quick Major and Harmonic Minor scale selection, adjustable range, and the clock speed can be set in Hz or synced to the project tempo.

Use the 'Note Weighting' dials to set the probability of each note being played, or turn them all the way to the left to turn them off completely."
