3 Complex Oscillators Blind Test (Rubicon/DPO/Furthrrrr)

Post by exper » Wed May 08, 2013 7:17 pm

*Spoiler Alert. If you want to be surprised and not influenced by the discussions, don't read any of the pages after 6. *

Ok. To start, this has no musical intention whatsoever. Its just meant to show some differences between the 3 analog complex oscillators. In the Rubicon's case, it was paired with a Dixie and uFold.

I won't reveal which is which until a few days.

One More Thing! You can comment on which ones you like, but try to refrain from posting your guess!

Each track has a short description. Pitches were matches wherever possible, and no effects or EQing has been used...

I wanted to spend more time on this, but the past 2.5 weeks have been insane for me. So these aren't done with any type of musical style or feel. Just FM sequences with some tweaking. IMO, some sound better at clean FM. See which one you prefer!

So, this is in no particular Order:

Make Noise DPO
Intellijel Rubicon/Dixie/uFold
Endorphin.es Furthrrrr Generator (Did I get enough 'R's there? :hihi:

3, then 1, then 2. But I would be happy with any of these.

Thanks for this. I've been very curious about the Furthrrr. Think I can pick out the DPO pretty clearly, but we'll see.

I definitely know what #2 is, which kind of ruins the poll for me... since I voted for it. :)

I did listen to them all objectively, though.

Damn. Close between 2 and 3 for me. But I went with 2 in the end. A bit more mellow.

I've not used any of these oscillators, so I've no idea at all which might be which!

From my computer speakers + posted files, my preference is 3, 1, 2.
Freakout pushed me over the edge to 3. FM/Optomix example on 3 sounds
different though, hard to imagine that's entirely the oscillator given the
similarities between 1 + 2 within that example and the differences they
exhibit elsewhere. Perhaps a change in modulation contour or amount going
to LPG?

Tough to say which I'd prefer in a rig, or my rig with modulation/tastes, etc.
Nice effort though Exper. Thanks.

I definitely know what 3 is cause i own one and i love it. I could pick it out of a police lineup any day. I'm also pretty sure i know what 1 is cause it's FM is differs from the others. Which means number 2 is pretty obvious...I think. I could be wrong.

My preference is 3,1 then 2.

PM'd my guess.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I noticed the DPO. We'll see. Speaking of, I need to check on all the other threads like this one and see if I was right, .

Chose 3 by the way, I liked the plonky FM.

3 > 1 > 2 also.

I'd be fairly confident at guessing which is which. The third sounds more dynamic and interesting to me, especially on the optomix and fm seq demos.

cool post exper, great to hear these side by side in 'blind mode' takes away any preconceptions and bias.

1 > 3 > 2 preference overall, although theres a 1 or two demos which 3 wins out over 1.

Got a DPO and think i can spot it, not sure though, but i have been wanting to pair up eithier a furthurr or Ruby with it for a while now, we'll see!

Thanks! That was the plan. Removed from hype, which fm actually sounds better, etc.

Anyway, should I wait until Friday to reveal them? I want to give people enough time to discover the poll.
